For over a year, Lester and Ndetroit brought you the definative scene report.
What started as a simple courier mag is now the most widely read scene
publication out there. Unfortunately times change, and with Lester and
Ndetroit taking less and less time for the scene, the mag has been coming out
late or not at all. Lester has officially retired from NWR, although he will
be back doing guest articles from time to time. Ndetroit is on a lot, but
he can't be expected to do it alone. Not much is going to change, we still
have all the same columnists as before. Ryche brings you his VCD report. Bud's
mammoth utils report is still here. The one thing that will change is our
release day, which will from now on be on Mondays. This week we're coming out
on Tuesday because these reports take time. So without further ado, here's
Lester.
- Blitz
Well kids, it's been one fun ride. This will be my last intro (hopefully),
as co-editor of NWR. I am retiring from everything, even NWR. Nd wants me to
do movie reviews and the occassional scene parody shit, so I'll be writing
still, but the courier report is now in whoever's hands and will remain that
way. Ryche and Blitz will be stepping up to make sure NWR continues to come
out on time and at the same level you all know and love. I don't like
retirement letters or any of that bullshit. But I thought I'd write my intro
and say it's been fun and thanks to everyone who I have known and everyone
who has read and hopefully will continue to read NWR in the future. Thanks
for making it fun for me anyways. <g>

-----------[ Sites and Stats ]-----------
This is ndetroit's baby, so I hope he'll be happy with this part. Instead of doing a combined
USA/EURO rankings, we've split the two spheres into two sections. The top ten euro and top six USA sites will be ranked here. Hopefully we'll see more USA sites worthy of this report in the future, but for now there are only a handful of true top sites out there. Thanks to Sketch and all of CWS for weektop compilation. Commentary here will be from SJ (euro), and Prozax (USA) this week.
- FH dropped RISE, picking up CORP who have learned to pre.
- RH upgraded it's link and the top traders have started to notice this site. RZR/DOD/TRPS affils could be better, but DOD is making a comeback it seems.
- TD to DEV
- TD moves from RAZOR to CLS
- Wia to DEV
- Cyrez to VICE
- SBC picks up RAZOR
- QC is back up, triple affils on utils and cracking (adding HARVEST)
- RT grabs DSI

AMNESIA - Well amnesia is amnesia.. Like most groups runned by lester/caserd
there is always controversy about them... i had 3-4 amn traders tell me that
they are unhappy there and the 'family' is wrong concept, everyone is selfish
and such. Enough of my BS . Overall they had a decent week with few ppl being
active such as sins, fain (comeback $ER^%$^% ??). Am sure they can do much
better after they get over thier BS and start trading for real.. Maybe caserd
/mgd/lester need to comeback to show thier real power?
DEVOTiON - Devotion is devotion = friends ahead of anything! Although group
been kinda idle lately with few exceptions. That can be tend to famous dev bbq
(i wish i was there #$%@#%) where most dev and other guys got drunk and
exchanged their trading skills (now u know how group dominates for 3 years)
Snake owned most sites (WTF HE IS BACK #@%#@#@$#@$%#@$%) and yes he had no
pre and old skills coming back .. maybe next we'll seee comwood/trix/nine/
fate and few other comeback from retirement??? (hopes) pft and thier kid
groups did not have lot of pre's that week not tc and other not ranked as
high as usual .. Overall decent.
AOD - tcd !@$$@!@!#!#$$ Yes they are most 'kewl' ppl around AFTER DEVOTION
(hi gollie sexy). They have this dude 'thedealer' he seem to be some kind of
weird ass motivator. It works though! They are #1 overall group with faith
(old skewl dude!!! from atmx) moonsaber and few other owning. Special
mention goes to Freakshow and his so called harry99 rlses. I spend 2 hrs of my
valuable time to dl last 3 big rlses he put out... Am like wtf installer etc
only 20 megs but rls is 100?? . Well there was this file size aprox 40 megs
with some wierd extension .. so am like lets ren if to *.exe.. and what do u
know its a ms voice sdk which can be dled for free .. Few other files were
something else as well as other rlses contained crap . Together 3 rlss = 300
megs and can be done as 3 rlses = 50 megs <g>
VICE - well nailz had a decent week and mrp as usual top if he has time that
week.. citizen kinda came back into the light... another good mention is
redman therefore decent week. No bs about vice i dunno them well so dont care
much :o
RISC - flavor only good guy left there. He needs to go somewhere else so i can
say risc = nothing
THUNDER - evilmind is kewl and sketch owns me as usual (where are my ascii
#%$#@%^@#^%#@$) Thunder always had class and been around for while , u guys
are kewl
AMBITION - pyx baby!!! thats all!
No more wasting time on other groups! Rumors are devotion will be back 10x
stronger with godbless coming active and few other key ppl. Gollie needs to
gimme me more sex and morbie vodka and thats about it.

ProzaX's US Scene Review
========================
Alright i'm a bit rushed for this since I just found out tonight so don't
expect to much from me in this issue. Well last week we seen ICC make it's way
one step closer to the top which they claim they will be, we'll have to wait and
see if these guys can last though, they are still fairly new and Blitz seems to be
carrying most of the weight for the group. Also we seen TD rise to the top as the
#1 site in the US it seems TD is taking over where TOS left off, not only in warez
speed but the same affils as TOS almost(CLS, DEV, PGC), lets wait and see if TD will
drop CORP and pickup PWA. Not much else to say for this week, but next week I
should have a full site and group review when i have a little more time!

-----------[ The Blitz Report ]-----------
Slow. That's how stuff has been. Changes are taking place with new leadership
at the helm of the three older groups. Origin leadership is nowhere to be
seen, raising speculation about their fate. Lots of rumours, no facts at all.
The scene rolls on, however. Been that way forever.

Paradigm seemed unphased by the loss of their leadership, probably since most
of their members are able to work without supervision. They roll out three
games this week. Respect INC. is the game of the week, and it's not bad at
all. Things are slow, this one is worth checking out. We see the real final
of Pizza Syndicate and a fairly good tennis game. Patch team lost some points
to other groups this week, but still managed two. The nuked Mechwarrior 3
release came on a race with Razor. No doubt about this one, it was 15 minutes
late.

Divine had the least to lose and the most to gain I guess, because they are
releasing fairly frequently these days. The siteops seem to have taken notice,
as they are picking up some good sites these days. Both of these games are
kinda iffy for a bigger group, but DVN needs releases, and they certianly
aren't as bad as a lot of the shit we see from the larger groups now and then.
They take second place for the second week this month.

Origin is waiting for spokesmodel ice to return from his vacation. Apparently
rumours of a bust in the UK are NOT true, and little ice is in fact
vacationing with mom and dad. Whatever the reason, this group is nothing
without Cypher and ice. Proof is in their releases from the last few weeks.

Idle this week.
This week TD dropped Razor 1911 from their affils. The reason they gave for
this was "We'd rather be Class's only site than one of many Razor sites. Razor
never missed a pre while TD was USCHQ, and did not ask for excessive amounts
of leechers. In fact the week before, TD came to me and asked that Razor not
pick up SBC as an affiliate. Now they leave Razor to join CLS in order to
please their new courier affil. TD's reputation suffers from this shameless
snubbing of a loyal affiliate. TOS will be back at some point, and TD cannot
compete with that link. They will be pushed back into the role IC held in
TOS's shadow. At least IC had CORE... TD even has the same cracking affil. All
this to get Devotion to be able to pre more. Sour grapes? I think not. This
was simply a matter of a site that never deserved the honor of being selected
for Razor 1911. I for one, am glad they left.

-----------[ The Blitz Report ]-----------
Woo, double issue. A little controversy this week, once again involving my
own group. This is one of the few reports in this magazine that claim to be
unbiased, so I do my best. Now I admit, I probably would not have gone to all
the effort I am to defend another group's release, but if anyone out there has
editorials to add to this in defense of your OWN group's controversial game,
I'll be happy to use it.

Paradigm wins on Braveheart, another long-anticipated game. Unlike a lot of
games that do not live up to their licensing, this one was in production long
before the movie came out. Once Braveheart became a box office smash, the
developers were able to negotiate a deal where they would use the Braveheart
name on their planned simulation. I haven't been able to get into this one
much (blame Origin for JA2), but from what I can tell it looks like a burn.
Paradigm rip into Origin pretty good in their fix for Jagged. They steal half
points for that. A little much in the nfo I thought, but Origin is pissing
everyone off pretty good these days. Winning a few USA games has made the
normally laughable antics of ice simply intolerable. Look for groups to both
raid this group for talent and the reverse ragging to continue.
Nothing else besides Braveheart. A few patches and trainers, nothing special.

Warhammer ROW was anticipated by a lot of TBS enthusiasts such as myself,
but I was seriously dissapointed by this title. Nothing wrong with what CLS
did, but what looked like a great game turned out to be simply average. The
addon for this game was a mixed speech/music addon. Since if they were
packaged seperately they would recieve a point apiece, we'll give them 2
points. International Cricket Captain is not as good as some of the other
cricket games we've seen and is scored as such. Mig Alley is a pass except
for die hards of the genre. Nothing special from CLS, but lots of quantity.
On to Rage of Mages 2. This is pretty simple really. Class says the USA
final that they released is the first and only release of Rage of Mages 2.
They say the Razor version is a beta and that it wasn't even complete when we
released it. Under faction rules (which both groups agree on), this game is a
dupe and nuke. Class, however disputes the existance of the other final,
claiming that this game was released for the first time in the USA. I direct
you all to the website http://www.nival.ru/index_e.htm for the proof and the
final word on Class's dupe.
Moscow - 9 July, 1999 - Nival Interactive announced today that Rage of Mages
2: Necromancer has been released by German software powerhouse CDV in Germany
on 18 June, 1999. Rage of Mages 2: Necromancer is a new game to be published
by Nival <http://www.nival.com> and Monolith Productions <http://www.lith.com>
in 2Q99. This game was published in Russia by Nival <http://www.nival.com>
and 1C <http://www.1c.ru> under the name of Allods 2: Necromancer on April 15,
1999.
April 15th 1999. That was a while ago. A full month before the Razor release
came out (051099). Since the Class version contains no playable difference,
it's a nuke and a 3.0 point deduction for dupe of Razor. We told you so.
Class's supplier refused to comment, ssaying only that he was told the game
was not done yet when Razor released it.

Much to my dismay, Origin lands what for me was the biggest catch of the year
thus far. I can't really comment on the ripping or crack of the game, because
I only played it until the ISO came out a few hours later. If I gave sixes,
this would be one. Unfortunately, the PDM fix is needed. I ran into the
problem described right away. When I went back to get a savegame so Razor
could start working on it, it didn't happen again. From what I can tell,
however the bug is legit. I don't know about PDM going apeshit on Origin on
this one, but I guess someone over there was pissed off about something or
another. DaJackal should keep doing the nfo's for Origin. He cut me down
pretty good in the nfo, but unlike the usual Origin shit, this one was kept
short and sweet. I really did want this title, unfortunate that it was
released in Europe before Canada.
Aside from that, OGN didn't do a lot. I didn't even bother testing the chess
game because I was busy playing Jagged and didn't have time. I'm guessing
it's a two. That's about standard for chess games. Despite their lower
ranking this week, and the fix... I'm giving Origin the week because Jagged
kicks ass. Even if once again they needed a fix.

Well, it's official. For whatever reason, Divine is back from the dead.
Darkstone is a long awaited RPG, and although I'm not a fan of the genre, DVN
beat out a couple of groups to release this one. Money trainers ain't shit.
You guys will have to do better than that. The AD&D thing was passed by all
groups (Razor decided to do the ISO for the hell of it). It's not a
legitimate game, it probably qualifies as a util. It was nuked almost
everywhere as either "bookware" or on my site as "geekware" =P. Regardless,
the geeks of the world love DVN this week. A RPG and a D&D util for those of
you who live in your parent's basement.

Well the cracking team certianly is keeping up their end of the bargain, but
the supply side is certianly not. Eight patches this week from these guys. The
kingpin patches were released within two hours of each other (the first was
released before the 1.13b came out). Only one will get points. Once again,
the new Starsiege Tribes patch is a Razor release.

I was accused of releasing a game called Jungle Legend by a few prominent
members of Origin. Apparently I'm the only person who has a slight dislike for
this rag tag group of limeys and Canadian crackers. For the record I didn't
have anything to do with this release, it came from Class. The nfo file rang
true enough to repost here. I didn't write it, but I wish I had.

Release Name: Jungle Legend
Company: Flair
Disks: 6 * 2.88M
Compression: RAR
Box hype: 3-D Action-Adventure games featuring forgotten ruins, lost temples,
& deadly beasts!
What I think: This game, just like about everyone in Origin, sucks royally.
It's made with the Twilight 3D Engine, and makes CARnivrous look like game
of the year. One crappy first person game.
So what does OGN SUX?: Because OGN is run by two highly egotistical numbskulls,
one who would sell his mum for a couple pounds, the other who constantly
sucks the other leaders dick, as he thinks sucking on cum will give him
white pearly teeth. One is a scrawny, pastey white-skined short midget, and is
taunted and laughed at in real life, gets beat up by local punks for pub
money, and sells games just so he can pay girls to tell people they like him.
The other bumrush any moving object with a wee-wee attached to it. Both have
over-inflated egos who will never admit to defeat or making a mistake.
They have no respect with any of the true elite in the scene expect within
their own members who they brainwash to believe the shit they pulloff is
just fine. They even went as far to burn bridges of the people WHO helped
shape the scene. Hey, clueless fucks, RESPECT THOSE who deserve it.
So please, do the scene some justice. Admit you guys have no lives, have small
penises and are socially enept. The ego shit only fucking buries you deeper
down to being the two biggest dumbshits that helped kill the scene.
To Origin, as one popular comedian says on the tube, "KISS MY ASS!"
This release is dedicated to the fallen people taken out by THE MAN because
they're only out to line there pockets for the rich. Keep fighting, we're
behind you guys.
To play: Just unrar into any directory, and run JUNGLE FEVER.EXE
What would the NWR game report be without a little Origin ragging? That's all
for this time. See you all in a week.
=----------------------------------=--------------------------------------=
-----------[ Bud's Biased Utils Report #28 ]-----------
Well it's been a while since I picked up my "pen" and went to work on the
report. I debated what to do about the weeks missed... and laziness and
schedule conflicts resolved the issue for me. So it's the current week
I'll be reviewing, and the rest are lost...
Except for a few things I think are worth noting. First, RBS released one
of the most useful generic protection scheme cracks in their FlexLM
license generator, and showed a lot of class in allowing other groups
to use it (when credit is given to RBS anyways, but give credit where
credit is due). Also earlier this month, LND lost a bunch of top CAD/CAM
titles... Cimatron IT 10, which went to PWA, congrats to them on an
excellent crack... also the Solid View series (newest versions) to Scum,
which they win for the second month in a row.
On a sad note, Rise has basically died... still a few members idling,
but Toth left for PWA, and other members jumped ship as well. Sad
to see a great group go. Gza announced the group was officially disbanded,
changed his mind and decided to wait for Kiterith... the premiere of Paragon
(another offspring of SGE) was a non-event... and on an upswing we have DOD,
putting out its first REAL challenge in some time.
Lots of other stuff, plenty of other good apps but.... :P
Disclaimer: It's BIASED moron. My opinion. So don't send me a bunch of mail
& messages bitching about this or that. If you don't like
it... SCREW YOU =]
Rankings: Groups get a score out of 10. Points are given for amount of
releases, but QUALITY titles will give a group a much higher score.
Nukes for duping, broken releases and just plain CRAP will lower
a groups score. However on the occasion that a title is nuked which
I don't feel should have been, MY OWN JUDGEMENT TAKES PRECEDENCE.
Cuz I'm writing this. Groups can also get points for any other
reason I see fit.
Week: Week is based from 07/20/99 to 07/26/99. I'm in the EST time zone so
dates/times run according to it.

PWA continues to be the strongest group in the pack, benefiting
from all the earlier member pickups. It's great to see an incredible
team of old infused with some new blood and once again slaughtering
the competition. Definately the top group of July. A few other groups
picked up the top titles of the week, but for all around quality and
consistancy it was PWA... what a change from a few months ago.

Pretty quiet here this week... one notable in Illuminatus, and
now for some explanations... two groups released the program,
2KAD and SHOCK. The 2KAD release came first, and was a crack
of the demo, while SHOCK's was a CD rip of the full retail
version. While 2KAD's release came first, they don't really
get credit, for while they removed the time limit on the demo,
it was missing features present only in the full retail version...
a crippled program with the time trial removed is still basically
a demo.

If you expected 3DSMAX 3 from XF or PWA, think again... DOD
picks up the top release of the week after SGM releases something
kind of fucked up... however DOD's release needed a fix as well,
thoughtfully provided by Harvest. On top, the addon package
is over 100 megs, a pain for analog users. Still, no one can deny
the importance of this tool in the animation field. Keep in mind this
program is a H-O-G on system resources, low-end systems don't have a prayer.

Harvest showed a lot of class in releasing a fix for DOD's 3DSMAX
without a fuss or an ego trip... unlike certain other individuals
ragging on DOD for the required fix... considering the amount of
fixes required over in the games camp at times, I'd say we're pretty
lucky, and on large apps that require so much testing... quit yer

TRPS is gone from the list, at least until they show they can release some

=---------[ Koka's Wacky Cracking Section ]----------=
Here we go, I am gonna try to make the scene people pay a bit more
more attention into the cracking scene, so here comes my report. I will be
rating each group and it's releases, with a ranking of them all on the end
of the report, based on my rating and the points I gave,. I am only going
to report the top 10 cracking groups of the week, but if you (REALLY
REALLY) want your group to be reviewed, bug me on irc and I will think
about it :P
If you have any suggestions, msg me on irc. Thanks :)
Kudos to Sketch/THD for helping me out with my english. Thanx bro!
Special Thanks to Bladey/DSi, for helping me with some stuff here. :)
Week is based from 18/07 to 24/07.

Those Matcom stuff are great. They are worth 3000$.. We dont see those
price ranges everyday on the cracking scene, eheheh.. Radiosim is a great
title as well.. The news for them is that they recently picked up Sick,
GenesisP and Xavier.. Also, HOG dropped them to pick up HLM.. and DSI
got NF/RT, which are two good sites. Bladey and rase, keep the work going.

36 releases, 01 nukes. Some keygens, but not the majority. Though HLM is
having their best days i believe. 36 releases is more than 5 releases per
day, which is considered a lot, even on cracking groups. They recently
picked Darkie, former DARKSTAR, and the site HOG as their new WHQ. Keep
the job up with HLM, senator.. From their releases, I Suggest WebSpeak and
G-Tune. They're good stuff.

=---------[ VCD Group and Movie Reviews ]----------=
VCD Group and Movie Review
We would like to begin by explaining some of the common terms used in VCD
releasing. These formats are:
CAM - A cam is usually a handheld camera snuck into a full theatre. The base
is shaky, the audio is poor, you can hear people laughing and talking. A cam
is distinguishable by usually having a combination of all three or more of
these flaws. Most sites nuke cams for their general poor quality.
Workprint - An early release of a movie. These are usually stolen or leaked
copies of movies that have made their way onto VCD from VHS or a variety of
other sources. These will usually contain running time codes as well as other
identifying marks used in movie production. The quality on these can vary
from bad to very good depending on the quality of the source material used to
encode the VCD. Note: This category is also used for very bad screeners or
copies of movies that just didn't fit into any of the other categories due to
defects or problems with the quality of the VCD's audio/video image.
Telesync - Basically a very good Cam. A steady base such as a tripod is used,
the theatre is empty or very close to empty, and the audio and video are up
to par. Although, you can usually detect some flaw with a TS. You may see a
random head pop up, the screen edges are noticable, or the audio isn't always
crystal clear. While not perfect, the quality in general of a telesync ranges
from good to very good and is usually the first type of VCD made of a new
movie.
Screeners - These are the top quality VCDs. They can be in either widescreen
(letterbox) or in full-screen (pan and scan) with excellent audio and video.
These are made from video distributors demo tapes, reviewers copies, insider
copies of the film or from any number of sources. Most screeners will contain
"1-800-NO-COPIES" or "Property of.." messages somewhere in the film, but it's
not a requirement to fit into the screener category. These most closely
resemble a VHS or LaserDisc copy of the movie. They're easily identifiable by
their top quality.

Ryche's Really Biased VCD Group Report #18
We're back hippies! The NWR staff finally got off its ass and put out an issue
and I'm right there with them with my Woodstock edition of the VCD Group
report. Burn, baby. Burn. The report will be a little thin lately, with the
VCD pack thinning out and VCD-Europe and EViLISO doing the majority of the
releases. Guess the other groups just either didn't survive, couldn't keep up,
or basically sucked the big one to begin with. Ce'st la vie.
In case your a new reader, we don't list DVD-Rips or the crap Cams because
they're nuked to eliminate thier distribution. Why? Well.. that's a good
question. And I'm here with the answers. A DVD-Rip is a sneaky dupe of a
screener released after the movie has already reached commercial distribution
on VHS/DVD. DVD is MPEG2, VCD is MPEG1. When you encode a DVD to VCD format,
you are just making a screener that has already been released. Screeners are
originally sourced from VHS, Laserdisc, and even DVD anyway. Just because it
says DVD-RIP doesn't mean superior quality. Most of the groups doing DVD-Rips
are using shit capture cards they bought for under $400 dollars and your
letting this crap stay on your sites. I pity stupid siteops and nukers. Cams,
not to much to say there. Bad audio, Bad sound, nuke 'em. Thank you and drive
thru.

VCD-Europe
The europeans are doing well lately. Thier release output has increased and so
have thier egos. I guess it just comes with the territory. Cookie's Fortune,
has Liv Tyler, that's a plus. Got good reviews, uh huh. It's comedy/mystery
about a crime that happens (or didn't happen) in a small town with interesting
characters. Robert Altman directed. My Favorite Martian is my candidate for
one of the worst movies of the year. Eyes Wide Shut was the hottest title of
the week, but in my opinion it's a HORRIBLE movie. Sure it's got naked chicks,
and a little Nicole Kidman flesh, but the movie drags and the story is boring.
One thing a few people have pointed out to me about the Telesync though, is
that they claim there are missing minutes. Lelee Sheboski is nowhere to be
seen (chick who looks like the young Mad About You chick) and that the total
running time for the movie is supposed to be 153 minutes for the US version
which would not fit on 2 CD's no matter how hard you tried. I haven't seen
the theatrical version so I cant confim WHICH scenes are missing but the VCD
is not complete apparently.
Total Points - 3.5 Points
EViLISO
Playing By Heart is a movie about romance and these people in Los Angeles who
are all connected in some way. Has Angelina Jolie (the Hackers chick) though.
Muppets From Space, is full of so much sexual imagery that it should've been
rated NC-17. I was shocked and appaled to see all those hand puppets only half
dressed. Ms. Piggy is a hottie by the way. EdTV, this time without subtitles.
Thank god. WTF is Lady of the Lake? I've been asked this a million times. It's
a cheap horror movie put out by Fangoria magazine about a guy who inherits a
house with a lake haunted by a gypsy chick. If it weren't for My Favorite
Martian, this would've been the worst movie of the weeek.
Total Points - 4 Points
DVNVCD
No, these aren't the Deviance people. They're the VCD arm of Divine and they
specialize in crap. Luminous Visions is an animated movie, and it's on video.
Go rent it for a dollar if you want to see it. They did HOWEVER, release the
one thing that may have garnered them a little of respect, even if most sites
did nuke it for being a music video. The Korn performance from Woodstock was
just about the main highlight (besides MTV running scared when people tried to
set them on fire) of the entire weekend. Grab it if you can find it.
Total - 1 Point
TWCiSO
This group seems to be trying to break into the real VCD scene, but just isn't
going to make it releasing the stuff that they do. After the Midsummer Night's
Dream fiasco last week (they released the old version), they've gone about
hopefully fixing the mistakes that have been made. The Analyze This with no
subtitles is a good release, but I find it very hard to take it seriously
from a group who has released about 90% of thier releases with subtitles.
Total - 1 Point
Total points tallied (even though the majority of the quality of movies is
questionable) and EViLISO edges out VCD-Europe simply because of the one
extra release. If I was a member of the leech scene, I'd probably go for the
Eyes Wide Shut to see some sex action, the Muppets From Space because Fozzie
and Gonzo remind me of Ndetroit and Lester, and definitely the Korn so I can
mosh around the apartment and break shit.
Peace and Love, man. Burn in Hell, bitch!

NWR Movie Sneak Preview Volume 1
Occasionaly (not very often, feds stay away) we get the chance to read the
script, or see a new movie coming out that hasn't been released yet. This
week, we present to you to the first edition of the NWR Sneak Preview.
WARNING: While trying not to give away the ending or any surprise elements,
it is sometimes necessary to reveal things about the movie while describing
it. If you don't want to know anything more than what the trailer shows you,
don't continue to read.
Fight Club
Starring: Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, Helena Bonham Carter, MeatLoaf (the
singer, not the food)
Directed by: David Fincher
US Theatrical Release Date: October 19, 1999
This week, the postman brought around the script for Fight Club which is
based on the book (thing with paper, you read) by Chuck Palanhiuk. I've seen
the preview trailer where they stand around and say "The first rule of Fight
Club is, you don't talk about Fight Club" and it looks like it's a some Street
Fighter clone with good actors. It's not. It is something amazingly,
wonderfully, much much more. The main character is Jack, an accident
investigator who analyzes his boring, mundane life and all the things around
it, and suffers from incurable insomnia. Jack finds that he can let go and
relieve his stress by going to strange support groups and watching how much
pain and suffering other people are going through. This makes him feel better
about himself.
Along the way, Jack meets Tyler Durden, played by Brad Pitt. At first he
seems like a modern day philospher who befriends Jack with his strange wisdom.
Well, Jack's condo blows up suddenly and now he has nowhere to go, so he asks
to move in with Tyler, who lives in an abadonned house. While they're out d
drinking, they fight, and they enjoy it.
Soon, fighting becomes a club, with Tyler Durden running the show. Fight
Club becomes a phenomenon, with everyday working people gathering to fight at
night in dark places unkown to the rest of the world. Jack, who was just a
regular boring person, now feels alive and in control. Everyone around the
city joins fight club. Bankers, waiters, average everyday people start showing
up with mysterious bruises, broken noses and the like. They beat the SHIT out
of each other. Tyler becomes a hero and a leader to these people. They do
anything he says.
The problem? Tyler is crazy. He wants to bring down society and start again
with people getting back to thier caveman instincts, living off the land, and
doing away with our commerical lives. His followers from Fight Club start a
secret society and start on thier reign of terror and mischief to destroy
everyday society.
If the movie is shot exactly like the script is, your going to see something
sort of like A Clockwork Orange. There are alot of scenes where crazy shit
happens and you see how the madness starts and how much control Tyler has
over Jack (and everyone else) who realizes he is in way too deep and no way to
stop it.
The main love interest is Marla who is a crazy chick that we meet at the
support groups who does the same thing Jack does. She just goes to see other
people suffering. She's fucked up, insane and she gets involved with Tyler in
a crazy psycho-sexual relationship that drives Jack nuts.
The ending I CANNOT give away because it isn't your average Jack vs. Tyler,
winner gets the girl ending. It's not like that. It is a SHOCKER! Tyler has
an army of insane followers who blow up things and are about to blow up
buildings all around the country, Jack, in the throws of madness, learns that
Tyler isn't who or what we thought he was, and the entire movie shifts into
overdrive.
With Edward Norton (The skinhead in American History X) and Brad Pitt
playing Tyler this movie is a definite winner (I hope). It is being directed
by David Fincher who did Seven. Brad Pitt has already shown us he can play
the crazy in 12 Monkeys, so I'm sure this performance will rival that. I wish
I could just give away what happens, but I've already told you too much. Go
see this when it comes out if you like excitement, action, crazy people and a
shocking ending.
