This is your one-stop resource for everything related to computer viruses, ranging from opinions and newsletters to anti-virus products to live viruses and source code. For an audio introduction to the contents of this CD and how to use it, please listen to \TAPES\INTRO.WAV! CONTENTS of The Collection CD ============================= Here is a list of what this CD contains. More detailed descriptions and important wisdom follow the list, and are included in the DOC files in each subdirectory: AEP_PUBS <DIR> American Eagle Publications, Inc. publications ALIFE <DIR> Non-viral Artificial life programs ANTI_VIR <DIR> Anti-virus programs and utilities, scan strings CD_TOOLS <DIR> Tools needed to use this CD effectively HACKING <DIR> Text and programs related to computer hacking HOSTS <DIR> Host programs used to infect with viruses JOKE_PRG <DIR> Non-viral, non-trojan joke programs LIVE_VIR <DIR> Live virus collection, well documented, tested NEW_VIR <DIR> New virus collection, not documented NEWSLETR <DIR> Newsletters and literature related to viruses PEOPLE <DIR> Viruses and source organized by author TAPES <DIR> Audio files concerning computer viruses TROJANS <DIR> Trojan horse programs and trojan-creating tools V_SIMUL <DIR> Virus simulator programs VIR_INFO <DIR> Virus information programs and text VIRTOOLS <DIR> Virus creation tools, mutation engines, etc. VSOURCE <DIR> Source listings for viruses READ-OR-.DIE (This file) CATALOG.TXT A catalog of other materials available from AEP. AEP_PUBS: Other materials published by American Eagle Publications, Inc. now available for the first time in electronic form. These include all of the Tech Notes, all of Computer Virus Developments Quarterly, all of the Underground Technology Review, and The Little Black Book of Computer Viruses! ALIFE: Miscelaneous programs related to other areas of artificial life research. ANTI_VIR: Anti-virus shareware programs commonly used to combat viruses. Please pay the shareware authors what they ask if you use their software. The anti-virus industry is in a real slump and if you want people to keep on top of the virus scene and write good anti-virus programs, realize that somebody needs to put food on their table while they do it. The price is really pretty reasonable for these programs. CD_TOOLS: This directory has tools to help you make use of this CD. Included are utilities to manipulate boot sector viruses and create live boot sector virus disks, and some assemblers. The software here is virus-free. HACKING: Here are files related to computer hacking, including war dialers, password crackers, and the SATAN program. You're sure to find some interesting stuff here. HOSTS: Hosts are programs that exist for no purpose but to be infected by viruses. Typically they just display a string saying "hello" and terminate. None of the programs in this directory are infected with viruses. Included are a standard test suite (\hosts\standard) and a utility to create new host files for viruses (\hosts\generate). JOKE_PRG: Programs that are not destructive, but may lead you to believe that they are doing something nasty when you run them. LIVE_VIR: This is a collection of more than 800 families of viruses, all of which have been carefully cataloged and tested. Each family is kept in its own subdirectory, and all executable files are numbered. Duplicate files in any subdirectory are different copies of the virus attached to the same host which do not compare byte-by-byte. Note that the cataloging here attempts to follow the usage of the scanner F-PROT, except where F-PROT is just obviously plain wrong. However, F-PROT may be wrong about some identifications, so if your scanner says that something in the \VIENNA\733 directory is something besides VIENNA.733, do not assume your scanner was wrong. F-PROT could have made the mistake instead. Where F-PROT could not or would not identify the virus properly, we used Dr. Solomon's Toolkit. This gives F-PROT and Dr. Solomon an edge on any testing done in this directory. Boot sector viruses are supplied as (A) droppers, (B) image files which can be written with tools in the \tools directory to disk, and (C) boot sectors. Often boot sectors aren't complete viruses, and therefore useless execpt for scanning purposes, but we'll give you what we've got. NEW_VIR: New viruses that are not well detected, and for the most part undocumented by the anti-virus community. NEWSLETR: See the help file in this directory for more information. These are newsletters from all different sources about viruses and hacking. PEOPLE: Viruses, source and tools organized by author. TAPES: Audio files concerning computer viruses, produced by Mark Ludwig. These include an introduction to using this CD and some basic advice on protecting yoru computer from viruses. TROJANS: This directory includes both live trojan horse programs and source code for them. See the READ.ME in that directory for more information. VSOURCE: These are source code listings and disassemblies of computer viruses. See the info file in that directory for more information. V_SIMUL: These are virus simulating programs, a safe way to see the effects of viruses or test people's use of a virus scanner, without releasing live viruses into a system. VIR_INFO: This directory includes text files about viruses, written both by anti-virus researchers and by virus authors, as well as some programmed databases of information. VIR_TOOLS: This directory contains virus creation toolkits and mutation engines used by virus authors to create viruses. These toolkits may be dangerous in and of themselves, and you should use them at your own risk. ******************************************************************************* * * * WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE ---> Your viruses! * * * * Anti-virus researchers, virus writers, hackers, system administrators, * * we want your viruses and we actively trade and buy new viruses. Please * * contact us for details. PLEASE USE THE TOOLS IN THE \CD_TOOLS DIRECTORY * * FOR SAVING BOOT SECTOR VIRUSES. FAILURE TO DO SO COULD DAMAGE THEM! * * * * Please write for a free catalog of other virus-related literature, or * * information regarding updates to this CD. * * * * American Eagle Publications Inc. * * PO Box 1507 * * Show Low, AZ 85901 USA * * * ******************************************************************************* One last note: Some of the files on this CD contain language that will be offensive to some. Some of it is in such poor taste that we can only condemn it (I wouldn't talk to a dog like that) and believe the authors to be disturbed people. It is provided here only so that you can get a true picture of what is going on out there, and so you can defend yourself from the meanest of the rogues.
