This version is in answer to Congressman Steve Schiff's inquiry to the GAO to pressure the Pentagon to declassify and release all documents pertaining to the Roswell debris. Recall that in 1947, the Air Force said that the debris was that of a crashed weather balloon. Now, according to the Air Force, it was a highly classified reconnaisance balloon under Project Mogul (Oh Uncle Phil, you are so sharp!). The Air Force has compiled a 25-page report on their findings which I am quite sure is being sent to Congressman Schiff. Congressman Schiff, the ball's in your court! (φ) Paused, Continue [Y/n]:By JOHN DIAMOND Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON (AP) - There'll be no convincing some people, but the Air Force says - again - the thing that hit the ground near Roswell, N.M., in 1947 was not the proof that UFOs exist. But it did prove that a crashing balloon could make a 47-year mess. There were no secret autopsies on space aliens who couldn't fly too well. No flying saucer pieces under guard on an air base. No big conspiracy. It was just a balloon. One of ours. Sorry. It took eight months to reach that conclusion, and the Air Force hopes now to put to rest talk in UFO circles that military authorities covered up a grand extraterrestrial event. The Air Force began the investigation in January after Rep. Steven Schiff, R-N.M., asked the General Accounting Office, the investigative arm of Congress, to press the Pentagon to declassify documents relating to Roswell. Air Force officials tracked down principals, combed archives, and even sent some old news photos to the CIA for analysis - all to try to deflate the persistent rumors of a massive government conspiracy to hide the truth. (φ) Paused, Continue [Y/n]:The effort produced a 25-page report, released Thursd which Col. Richard Weaver concludes that the debris a rancher found probably came from a once top-secret balloon designed to monitor the atmosphere for evidence of Soviet nuclear tests. Of the UFO theories, Weaver had this to say: "What is uniquely lacking in the entire exploration and exploitation of the Roswell Incident is official positive documentary or physical evidence of any kind that supports the claims of those who allege that something unusual happened." However, Weaver predicted "pro-UFO" elements simply would dismiss his report as part of the cover-up. Indeed, Walter Haut, a volunteer at the UFO Museum at Roswell, a center devoted to gathering information on this and other UFO incidents, wasted no time in rejecting the Air Force conclusions. "I feel very strongly about it," Haut said. Referring to those who made the original UFO claim, he said, "We're not talking about flaky people." In July 1947 the owner of a ranch near Roswell picked up debris that included scattered foil-coated fabric, sticks, rubber and some small I-beams with strange markings. Maj. Jesse Marcel, the Army Air Force intelligence officer who brought in the wreckage, was reported to have recovered a "flying disc." A local headline screamed that the Air Force "Captures (φ) Paused, Continue [Y/n]:Flying Saucer." All this coincided with a surge of in unidentified flying objects, purportedly from outer space. Days later a higher-ranking officer identified the material as the remains of a weather balloon. But the seed of what became known as the Roswell Incident had been planted. There the matter stood until 1978 when the supermarket tabloid National Inquirer retold Marcel's story. A series of books followed advancing the UFO theory and accusing the Air Force of cover-up. The Robert Stack-hosted television show, "Unsolved Mysteries," aired a re-creation of the Roswell incident. A made-for-TV movie is in the works. The original reports of a few foil scraps at one ranch site evolved into planeloads of material scattered over multiple debris fields. And the relatively simple materials found would later be described as exotic metals and fiber-optic materials. At a second site, according to some accounts, the Air Force found the bodies of extraterrestrials. All this was kept from the public by an elaborate conspiracy orchestrated by the Air Force, critics charge. "The Roswell Incident has since grown to mythical, if not mystical, proportions," Weaver wrote in the Air Force report. The UFO theories, he wrote, are generally "undocumented, taken out of context, self-serving or otherwise dubious." The Truth About RANSOM PC/CONSOLE From an Ex-Member Learn How they Get Releases! *** REVISED INFO! This was told to me by a current member of Ransom who DID NOT get what he was promised by them. READ AND TAKE NOTE Well since i parted ways with RANSOM PC/CONSOLE, i'd just like to tell everyone about how the group really works. RANSOM is very desperate for suppliers of any kind. We have been told to beg anyone to supply for us, and still we can't get our hands on anything. Just recently one of our top members Jordan has decided to release files grabbed locally. Thanks to Jordan we have gotten our stuff fast from the Internet, CRS, and from the IBM and Microsoft support boards in Toronto. As for console RANSOM is totally dead, and doesn't want to bother renting anymore games from the local kwiki mart. If you look at the RANSOM.NFO you'll notice Jordan, AKA "Kracken" "Wolfric The Wild" "Screech" is listed 3 times. We had to make the NFO look real good, so we included him that many times. Also we put in some real cool people like Ace of Spades, and Laz. Still the NFO didn't look elite, so we added Le Magnifque and Raider who (φ) Paused, Continue [Y/n]:were VERY hesitant to be included amoung our Kick ass The point i'm trying to make is look at RANSOM, they are releasing Public Domain files, and Internet Shareware, and its packaged and supplied by the one and only Jordan, Kracken, Screech, Wolfric The Wild, Wilfred of Ivanhoe, Pharoh, whatever he wants to call himself. its a good thing i'm no longer with Ransom as they are a real loser group, headed by a 13 year old child named Jordan Gheller. <end> ╒╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╤╕ ├┤ Continue │ Download │ Jump │ Kill │ No More │ QScan │ Reply │ Skip │ *CMD ├┤ ╞╪╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╧╛ └┴ [587/600]|[#47]|[+/-] End of Message: Jump to the Next Conf (φ) Scanning: $YN PCBoard Support (29) Conference Date: 10-08-94 (00:02) Number: 34 of 110 (Refer# 21) To: SOUL KEEPER From: HOZZER Subj: PCB SETUp Read: 01-04-95 (00:17) Status: PUBLIC MESSAGE Conf: $YN PCBoard Support (29) Read Type: GENERAL (A) (+) HAS REPLIES SK>GF> I'd rather take the time to customize the board in PCB. Something unique to V.34 is the amount of cooperation that's happened between vendors. U.S. Robotics, Motorola Codex, AT&T, AT&T Paradyne, Cornel (in Ireland) and perhaps other companies have all done up-front data-pump compatibility testing to ensure that V.34 products are compliant with the standard and interoperate. Rest assured that as other manufacturers develop working prototypes, they will join the list. This is the direction companies are spending their engineering. It (φ) Paused, Continue [Y/n]:doesn't help any of us if our products don't work wel the purpose of V.34 -- to have an international standard for 28.8. A lot of new ideas and technology have been developed in conjunction with the standard, and what we as a committee originally envisioned has changed significantly. There have been some outstanding discoveries and developments made in the process, a few of which were also used in proprietary pre-V.34 modems. But, V.34 has it all: precoding, which compensates for severe amplitude distortions; powerful multidimensional trellis coding; constellation shaping and other innovations that give V.34 a greater immunity to noise; nonlinear coding, which addresses the problem of signal peaks being distorted due to non-linear circuit elements; and line probing, which enables V.34 to quickly examine line conditions and select the best transmission strategy to optimize data transmission. V.34 also uses an channel probing technique that can detect certain unusual non-linear distortion mechanisms present on some phone circuits, especially on international circuits. The modems can then select operational modes that better combat distortion. (φ) Paused, Continue [Y/n]:All 28.8 modems are not created equal. The goal of a not only to have a high top speed, but to spend as much of the time as possible operating at the highest possible speed under changing conditions. The V.34 protocol has advanced procedures for training and for recovery from transient disturbances during training. There are several retrain procedures to insure link integrity under adverse conditions. Rate renegotiation procedures allow rapid switching ranging from 4800 to 28800 bits/s as the channel conditions vary. Additionally, V.34 will be the enabling springboard for a host of new applications -- low bit rate video and audio graphic conferencing are new applications that will capitalize on the increased V.34 bit rate and because it is an international standard. In fact, the overriding benefit of V.34 is that it IS an international standard. Many of U.S. Robotics' corporate customers have been waiting for the V.34 standard to be approved because they know it will be supported by a larger number of vendors than any proprietary protocol. I hope this information is helpful. Please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] with any further questions or concerns. Everyone's gotta leave for some reason sooner or later. As you know, I've retired once for some time, then went back into the scene, cuz I had spare time. Now I realize that I'm not going to have any more. Being a part of the Scene for over 8 years now, I'll really miss it. You guyz were a blast. Group fights, blacklists, releasing/cracking competitions, Elite discussions, watching the scene develop, new modems (300,1200,2400,9600,14.4 & 28.8), new protections/doc checks/ cracking/trainer groups & other stuff was just some of the things that we all experienced while the scene grew. One can only have such experience in our self-made "Underground Universe". I know over 200 individuals, and have probably chatted with another 2000. I've met real lamers, and top Elites. I've called systems World-Wide, and local. I've seen it happen, and disappear. All dat, I'll miss. In leaving the scene, I'd like to leave some things on your minds. These views are real, I hope that they will help u's all out. (φ) Paused, Continue [Y/n]: In recent months, a lot of systems got shut down. A lot of these systems were Elite. Whenever you drive your car, you'll always encounter an asshole that cuts you off, then shows you the finger. This is also true in the bbs World. There are guys out there NOW, who, because of low-self esteem, jealousy, or simply money, rat on someone who they don't like. I haven't heard of any "group rats", but I sure hope that groups out there, don't start to rat on the other's boards to lower the competition just to be #1 - that wud be the lowest thing any Elite could do. C'mon guys, this is not a game. If you are a sysop, here's some guidelines you should follow. They are here to give you an idea of what to do: 1) Always have Elites refer someone 2 u. Never accept new callers - even if they have some "Well known Elite handle" - u never know if it's the REAL person calling or an imposter. Most cops will call into a system under a well known Alias in the bbs World, then after being promptly validated, download their proof, and it's game over 4 u. 2) Always voice-validate ANY Elite applying to your board. Call the (φ) Paused, Continue [Y/n]: guy collect if you have 2. Then ask him if he's enforcing agency. This way you're 100% sure that he's who he say's he is. 3) Make ALL Elites fill out a questioner form, that specifically asks them if they are working for a law abiding agency. Cop's can't lie - if they do, it'll be used against them in court. They have to honestly answer that question. - Always make a backup of that filled out form & your system activities. Then hide the backup somewhere safe. I have heard of some instances, where the cops altered a confiscated system's contents to help em win the case in court. 4) Once a while, your system board number will be leaked out - by mistake or deliberately. If that happens, and you find out about it, or your underground bbs # gets "published" in some lame bbs mag that lists all the underground boards in the states, I strongly recommend that you change your # to another #. It doesn't cost much. 5) Protect your system with some util/prog that when you boot up, it asks you for your PW. If you get it wrong 5 times or so, it WIPES CLEAN your disks. Now you wouldn't be THAT lame to type your PW wrong 5 times. This is good if your system IS confiscated, and the cops are trying to access your drives, they WILL try to get by it (φ) Paused, Continue [Y/n]: at least 5 times and if they do, they will find n Most of them "think" they know what they are doing. After bragging and describing the bust to their fellow cop colleagues, they will try to show off and "bypass" that stupid password check. They'll be REAL pissed if, after failing 5 times, they hear all the drives go wicked and a small little msg on the screen kindly and gently points out to them : "Thank you for using TRY-YOUR-LUCK password security " "By seeing the amount of password re-tries, you must " "either be the dumbest sysop around, or just a cop. " "I think you're the latter. Ok, well your winning " "prize consists of a freshly formatted drive C: " "You have 1 gig of free space to d/l the l8est warez." "Have phun! - and btw, you're good with computers! " (Someone should really write a util like this. C'mon all ya new groups - r u looking for something to release? - Contact your local lame virus group and ask them how to write very simple yet fast and effective code which destroys a hard disk in seconds. They would be glad to help, after all, they are the experts!) (φ) Paused, Continue [Y/n]: - Don't bother 2 protect your drive with some disk-locking password protection that doesn't let ANYONE access the drive without the proper password. Cops will simply tell you if you don't co-operate, they'll lay bigger charges, or they'll contact the company which made the password program and ask them to aid them in bypassing it. 6) Never keep system backups at home. You can be charged with much more copyright violations from the software companies which you might have had "offline!" 7) If you're running a BIG Elite system, and notice a lot of busts in your area code, why not shut it down for some months - this way you can rest assure that no one will break down your door at night. Put it back up under a different number. Have only Real ELITE users. 8) Never charge for your system's usage - if you're running a pir8 board. I've seen a lot of sysops building big boards, and giving full access to ny lamer that pays, in hope of getting a bit richer - it used to work back in the old days bois, now don't try it. This is the easiest way to get busted - "He just pays $60. You just pay 1 year." 9) There will always be professionals & beginners. Don't think just (φ) Paused, Continue [Y/n]: because you have been in the scene for quite some and run a 4 node 4gig system, that you are Elite and know what's going down. You might be Elite. The drug dealer NEVER knows when he's been setup. Neither do you. - "All the busts up 2 now have been leaked to the proper authorities by someone on the doomed system. Remember that." 10) Be careful. Be smart. I hope the above helps. Something for the Elites of the Elites: If you're a high Elite, don't blow up your ego even more. You are not, and will never be the TOP of all Elites. There will never be a "King of the Underground". There will never be a World dominating group. We all change, new groups develop, new faces appear. We are The Bois, the ordinary race of human beings that make it all happen. Treat each other like a bro treats a bro. Stand up for each other.
