Unprotect for The Colony (IBM PC)
BE SURE TO BACKUP YOUR THE COLONY DISK BEFORE STARTING AND USE THE
BACK UP FOR THE UNPROTECT.
Modify only the backup copy!!!
First you should rename the file or files
COL.EXE TO COL
Ex. C>rename col.exe col
Next Load program into debug...
Ex. C>debug col
Then Follow the sample debug session:
-r : Get the value of the CS register
CS=WWWW
XXXX=WWWW+1000 : Add 1000 hex to value
(These numbers are in hex. If you are
unfamiliar with the adding of hex
numbers don't attempt this patch)
-s XXXX:0000 ffff be 05 00 2b: Search of protection pattern
XXXX:YYYY : The search will return four addresses.
XXXX:YYYY If more or less than four are returned
XXXX:YYYY this unprotect may not work.
XXXX:YYYY
ZZZZ=YYYY+0009 : Add 7 to all addresses found
-e XXXX:ZZZZ eb : Edit the contents of each of the
computed addresses
Now write the new col game back to the disk:
-w <Enter>
Writing XXXX bytes
Then Quit Debug:
-q <Enter>
Now it is time to rename col back to col.exe
C>ren col col.exe
Now try to run the new (Hopefully) unprotected version of The Colony
just push ENTER when asked for secret codes.
C>col
