Dam Busters DID NOT NEED TO BE CRACKED! All you do is copy the ORIGIONAL 65k
or so file, from the ORIGIONAL DISTRIBUTION DISK to another disk using the copy

Then, also copy RAMKEY.COM, or NOKEY.COM onto drive A:, and first run RAMKEY
[Or NOKEY] then DAMB.EXE. It will run prefectly. This is the only protection
placed on the disk. Simple, eh?

There are three levels of play:

1. Practice Dam Approach [limited enemy action]
2. Flight Lieutenant [starts from the English Channel]
3. Take off from Scrampton Field

You should work your way through the levels.

First you should practice the bombing run itself [level one]. There are a
number of steps to be done quickly, but enough practice will make this
virtually automatic.

In the next level of difficulty, you begin over the English Channel. You
will man numerous positions in which you can navigate, fly the plane, fire guns
and watch your engines. One key is that you must know each of the necessary
tasks so well that they can be performed almost instantly. You must also
develop a pattern, as real pilots do, for monitoring different positions. Your
flight to Germany will be fast and furious. You need to know which things have
to be done immediately, such as fires in the engines. You will probabally
spend a good deal of time in the front gunner position. When the pace is too
hectic, hit the ESC key. This freezes the action and gives you a moment to
think until you press the ESC key again to continue play.

It will take considerate effort to prefect individual tasks, such as shooting
a fighter that is bobbing and weaving while firing at you. Remember the flying
ace Baron Von Richthofen [The Red Baron] was a superb bird hunter before the
war. In aerial combat you must aim in the same way by leading the target, and
shooting where it will be next.

The highest level of difficulty is the Squadron Leader level. In taking off
from Scampton Field you must set your flaps and engines correctly, then adjust
engines and retract flaps and landing gear once in the air. You will fly south
from England and you're ready for the rest of the mission: across the English
Channel and European continent to the target.

The primary keyboard controls use the four directional keys [arrow keys], the
space bar, and the CTRL key.
Joystick functions the same way as the direction keys:

o Top button is the same as the space bar.
o Bottom button is the same as the CTRL key.
ESC-pauses game/continues game [if paused] then while paused,
   o ESC continues game
   o ENTER restarts game

S-Sound on J-Joystick control
Q-Sound off K-Keyboard control

In your lancaster bomber there are eight positions. Press the corresponding
number or function key to go to that position.

1. Pilot 6. First Engineer
2. Front Gunner [also bombardier] 7. Second Engineer [used only on
3. Tail Gunner Squadron Leader level]
4. Bomb Specialist 8. Mission report
5. Navigator

When a crew menber's position is in trouble, his number will flash at the
bottom of the screen.

Key Points From Documentation Manual

The intercom blinks "#1" [pilot's position] if the plane is below 450 feet
and the pitch is negative.

Use the arrow keys or joystick for control.

The beginning player should set his course at the very start of play. The
navigator has two different map views. The first shows your current position,
with a plane moving across the map. Push the CTRL key to switch to the second
view, which displays the map cursor. Move the cursor to the edge of a screen
to go to the next map [if there is one in that direction].

Switch to this position at the very start of play, and your cursor will be on
a map of England. Go south one screen, and east two screens, to reach the area
of Germanywith the three dams and their corresponding lakes. Position the
cursor on a dam and press the space bar to fix the navigator's heading cursor,
[indicated by a square at this position].

When you set the navigator's vertical cursor, the compass heading at the top
of the screen will change--so will the dark reddish marker on your pilot's
compass. This shows you the heading to take when you return to the pilot's

The six maps of Northern Europe contain colored symbols that stand for major

circle--military installation diamond--city
aircraft--military airport smoke stack--industrial center

Hit enemy planes, and you can knock out searchlights when they first appear
in the distance.

The front gunner controls twin 303 caliber F.N.5 machine guns, and in the
rear twin F.N.20 303 caliber guns.

  Control of engines and propellers.

  Four throttles [bottom left]
  Four boosters [bottom right]
Fire extinguisher and indicator light [upper right] for each engine

To change throttle or booster settings, position the control dot below them,
and hold down the space bar while using the directional keys to move the
"controls". Position the dot below the center of each group in order to
control all four at once.

  Throttles-Like accelerator on a car
  Boosters-Like gears on car
Must be in balance for efficient use of power and control over-revving.

An engine is over-revving if the rpm needle is in the upper right quadrant.
Reduce throttle immediately. An engine fire is indicated by the fire indicator
light above each extinguisher.

Extinguish fires with care. Once an engine is doused, it's premently out.
In order to keep flying straight, decrease the throttle on the opposite side.
Even losing both engines on a side can be handle by moving the trim to its
highest setting.

Role: Set the preliminary switches [bomb rotator and spotlights] on.
Spotlights shine down on the water and are only displayed at a low
altitude range. When their reflections are just touching each other,
the plane is at the right altitude. Timing is curcial, as setting the
rotator changes the front gunner function to that of bombardier. Thus,
you will have no machine gun defense against attack. However, set the
switches too late and you'll miss the target.

At the very beginning of the bombing run, you must turn the plane so you can
get lined up with the dam while still over the land, then fly straight over the
lake to the target.

If you're too high as you begin your approach, lower your nose so you're
dropping toward 60 feet. Then switch switch to the engineer screen, #6.
Position the control dot down in the center beneath the set of throttles, in
order to adjust all four at once until they read appproximately 11 o'clock. Do
the same for the boosters on the right until their gauges read approximately 5

Next, return to the pilot's screen to check your speed. When the needle is
at the mark near one o'clock, you're flying at 232 mph.

Closer in, the dam appears on the horizon as a line. Aim straight for it,
and make sure the plane is flying level. Your altitude should be close to 60
feet [altimeter reading 12:40]. Periodically re-check your altitude and speed.

Go to position #4. Place the control dot below the bomb rotation switch on
the left. Hold the space bar while using the "down" directional key to set the
rotator. On the right, throw the spotlight switch the same way. Avoid doing
this over enemy territory--it makes you a beacon for enemy gunners. Now use
the directional keys until the two balls of light just touch. Your plane is
now at the perfect hight of 60 feet. Setting the rotator changes the front
gunner function to that of the bombardier.

Switch to the bombardier [#2], who is now controlling the bomb sights. When
the dam towers are positioned between the bomb sights, and touch them, you are
the proper distance from the dam, 800 yards. Press the space bar and... bombs

With success, the bomb skips over the water above the torpedo nets and hits
the crest of the dam, sinking along its face to 300 feet below the surface,
which fires the depth-sensitive hydrostatic pistols and sets off the blast.

If you've missed, try again. Your Lancaster carries several bombs.

  Shows current game status.

On this level you take off from the runway at Scampton Field, north of
London--which involves several adjustments at the second engineer's position
[described below].

The second engineer must first set [raise or lower] the flaps down for
takeoff. The flaps are an extention of the wing that increases the wing area
and so gives greater lift when lowered. Give the engines full throttle and
full boost [position #6].

You will be able to pull up the nose of the Lancaster once takeoff speed is
reached using the "down" directional key.

Once off the ground, you must lower the throttles and boosters as soon as
possible in order not to over-rev the engines. Also retract the landing gear
and the flaps to increase airspeed. Use the "up" directional key to increase
altitude, and you're off.

The rudder trim on the second entineer's screen adjusts your flight left or
right. Moving the joystick up, with the red button pushed, will guide your
plane to the right. Moving the joystick down turns the aircraft to the left.
Moving the trim to its hightst setting will compensate for losing both engines
on a side.

Good Luck!

The primary reason for the writing of this file is the fact that people may
not be fully appreciating the Dam Buster game. I have seen some documentation
out, but it is lame at best. What I have given you here is the actual text of
the actual documentation distributed with the game. Enjoy!
