Much love to the scene, no hate, and extra props for those taking the time to read here. To start off: this is not a 'hater' magazine, and we aren't trying to insult or bring anyone down with it. Our aim is pure and simple: to bring the scene's attention back to the music! All involved in this report are lovers of music, with no politics or dramatic baggage, We just want to share the love! That is why, every 2 weeks, we'll compile a list of the best non-mainstream records released in the scene, and give you all the info you need to decide whether or not you want to hear them. We do this because, each day, records slip under the radar because people may not know the name on the album -but that doesn't mean they wouldn't love the music inside. We feel it's time for other music -- non-mainstream, underground, whatever you want to call it -- to push forward and be heard by more ears around the world. We hope this report can turn you on to things you may not have found otherwise, and perhaps cause some people to expand their opinions of what they call 'music.' The Non-Mainstream Music Report is now a joint venture, compiled by 17 groups, but it is important we stress that we won't always be able to list all of the scene's great releases. Because of this, we ask other dedicated groups to start their own reports, magazines, etc. And if you're a dedicated group who feels your vision fits in with ours, please get in touch to join up! There are hundreds of albums released each day, but so little information provided! More information distributed means more knowledge, and more knowledge means smarter, better-educated listeners. And even though we don't get to say it enough in the nfo's: support the artists!! It goes without saying that these are not millionaire pop stars, and they need to sell records in order to be able to create more of them. With all that said, please, enjoy the report. :) *Siteops! The Non-Mainstream Music Report script -- which is available in the accompanying zip file -- is a quick and easy way to access all of our suggestions. By creating symlinks to all of the records listed in the report we hope to save you time and effort while seeking out this great music. ________________________________________________________________________________ . .:[+] HiT2k [+]:. . ________________________________________________________________________________ >>> Can--Tago_Mago-Remastered-2004-HiT2000 >>> Can--Monster_Movie-Remastered-2004-HiT2000 >>> Can--Soundtracks-Remastered-2004-HiT2000 >>> Can--Ege_Bamyasi-Remastered-2004-HiT2000 Release Date: 2004-10-09 Label Info and Catalog #: Spoon Records Artist/Album Info: CAN remastered!!! Spoon Records, in collaboration with Warner Music for Germany/Austria/Switzerland and Mute/EMI Records London for the rest of the world, is releasing remastered versions of the classic CAN albums. All remastered 14 albums will play on CD players, SACD players and SACD compatible DVD players and will include exclusive unseen photos from the time and new sleeve notes. The release of the first four albums Monster Movie, Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi and Soundtracks on is scheduled for October 2004. The release of the rest of the catalogue is scheduled for 2005 and 2006. The albums were all remastered from the original master tapes and were overseen and attended by Holger, Irmin and Jono Podmore, so that they finally sounded on CD how they were always intended to sound. These releases follow the recent success of the DVD release, CAN DVD, which marked the 35th anniversary of the founding of the group. Always at least three steps ahead of contemporary popular music, Can were the leading avant-garde rock group of the '70s. From their very beginning, their music didn't conform to any commonly held notions about rock & roll — not even those of the countercultures. Inspired more by 20th century classical music than Chuck Berry, their closest contemporaries were Frank Zappa or possibly the Velvet Underground. Yet their music was more serious and inaccessible than either of those artists. Instead of recording tight pop songs or satire, Can experimented with noise, synthesizers, nontraditional music, cut-and-paste techniques, and, most importantly, electronic music; each album marked a significant step forward from the previous album, investigating new territories that other rock bands weren't interested in exploring. * >>> By_The_End_Of_Tonight--The_Fireworks_On_Ice-EP-2004-HiT2000 Release Date: 2004-10-11 Label Info and Catalog #: Temporary Residence (TRR75) Artist/Album Info: Well, since my suggestion of a "Tiny Mix Tapes: Win A Dream Date With Ashlee Simpson Trivia Contest" was shouted down at the bi-monthly shareholders meeting and dually met with prohibitive legal action from the Simpson camp, I will simply give you the answer to the trivia question which was: What was Theodore's favorite food on Alvin And The Chipmunks? The answer of course is manicotti. While the contest failed, my album review segue is still very much alive, and here it is: The drummer for the Texas based, instrumental genre kaleidoscope, By The End Of Tonight, you see, plays a child's drum kit, yes, much like Theodore was known to play. A child's drum kit, however, with a double kick drum. And let me tell you, such a beating of raw intensity and passion, these drums were never designed to take. The size of the drum kit, though, is really the least interesting thing about this quixotic quartet's debut EP, Fireworks On Ice. Each of the four tracks are at once stitched together and torn apart at the seams with the styles spanned. They are as comfortable with rapid, off-kilter, single note tinkering a la Hella as they are with a Lemmy-esque chainsaw onslaught. Not uncommon would it be to find them alternating the two multiple times within the same thirty seconds. On "Video Games Buried Beneath The Desert," when one of the members shouts out "May I have your attention please?!" during a rare break in the sound, coming after a furious punk power chord progression, a lulling Mogwai-like arpeggiated build up, and a machine gun, dual guitar, single string metal riff, simple irony has never known more thickness. Oh, and if you think that the whole child's drum kit thing is simply a gimmick, while I can't tell you that it for sure isn't, I can tell you that the drumming is spot on fantastic and that after the first minute or so, you'll question what this whole full size drum set trend is all about. Okay, but don't get weird on me quite yet. I don't really like math-rock either, and while I like the idea of a band such as Hella, ultimately after a time, the complex hijinks and noodling begin to make it seem more interesting to be the one playing than the one doing the listening. In terms of instrumental music, I am more drawn to the lush dramatics and screaming crescendos of a collective like Explosions In The Sky. By The End Of Tonight feel pretty much as I do, and within every track amidst stop on a dime changes and phrenetics are moments of heartfelt, swelling gorgeousness, rivaling the best of the post-rock climaxes you've died over. Math-rock with a heart! I never thought I'd see the day. Despite the awful, awful name, By The End Of Tonight, is the next band to crutch your Pitchfork cred upon (so long Deerhoof!). They are the only band Temporary Residence has signed from an unsolicited demo, and by Jove, for good reason. At once, inscrutable yet mind blowing, technical yet playful, speed metal yet good, they have set a high bar with merely an EP to their name. Rated 4.5/5 http://www.bytheendoftonight.com/ http://www.temporaryresidence.com/ * >>> Keith_Fullerton_Whitman-Schoner_Flussengel-KRANK071-Vinyl-2004-UKi Release Date: 2004-10-12 Label Info and Catalog #: KRANK071 Artist/Album Info: Schoner Flussengel is the follow up to Keith Fullerton Whitman's Antithesis LP release from April, 2004. As was the case with Antithesis LP, this is a partly archival, vinyl-only album released in a limited pressing of 1,000 copies. Consisting of material with a decidedly dark mood overall, the new album embodies Whitman's considerable musical scope. With tracks recorded using vocals, computer, clarinet, synthesizer, record player, microphone, bell and guitar the album traverses grittier and more complex territory than its predecessors. The six tracks veer from multifi drone to computer-guitar-piano trio. The vcs3 that runs through the two "Lixus'" tracks was recorded at Soma in Chicago in 2001 with the aid of Casey Rice and John McEntire. Packaged in a faux-dark metal album jacket with suitably intricate gothic script, Schoner Flussengel is a dip into a cold, stygian stream that splashes and flows around the listener. Keith Fullerton Whitman's musical interests have taken a course towards solo experimentation of late. Schoner Flussengel was begun as Whitman took a lecturer position at Harvard and gained access to the University's sound labs. As Whitman worked on his Multiples album project for kranky, the material that coalesced into Schoner Flussengel required a separate album. The album title is German for beautiful river angel. * >>> The_Boats-Songs_By_The_Sea-Moteer003-CD-2004-UKi Release Date: 2004-10-06 Label Info and Catalog #: Moteer003 Artist/Album Info: The music on the debut album by The Boats was written by The Sea, hence the title ?Songs by The Sea?. Clever huh? The faces behind the project have a history of performing in many bands, Hood and The Remote Viewer being but two fine examples. There?s Craig and Andrew delicately weaving together these exceptionally moving pieces, while elaine sings along in a fluttering, beautifully broken manner. Their music takes in numerous instruments, from dusty sweeping drums to ageing accordions, from sterling vintage piano to warm padding bass, from tapped windblown bells to unconsciously puffed melodica. Pan over to the other side of the studio and you discover old bits of malfunctioning electronic machinery, drum-machines that don?t quite work as they should, banks of amnesiac samplers trying to regain their memories, mixers that have started to confuse left with right. Songs by The Sea captures that ageless essence of atmosphere and heartbreak, nostalgia and inspiration, the sound of slowly fading memory seeping into and confusing itself with a multicoloured subconscious. This is music in the finest, unspoken tradition of lonely seafaring, written from the furthest depths of the ocean, with whatever instruments just happen to lie around on deck. A huge recommendation. * >>> Stafraenn_Hakon-Ventill-Poki-RESLP009-Vinyl-2004-UKi Release Date: 2004-10-06 Label Info and Catalog #: Resonant Belgium RESLP 009 Artist/Album Info: This third full album from Stafraenn Hakon is a superb development on the first two. The first thing that strikes you is the more band orientated sound that kicks things off. A drummer, proper songs, all mixed up with the superb trademark layered guitar sounds. Kind of like some of the earlier constellation material back when they were leading the way with this kind of music. A beautiful balance develops throughout the album with lush, dense soundscapes dominating in the latter half combining a fragile sounding gorgeousness with a majestic and somewhat epic style. This is a magnificent piece of work, for fans and newcomers alike. * >>> Fourcolor_-_Air_Curtain-(12K1029)-CD-PROPER-2004-HEB Release Date: 2004-10-05 Label Info and Catalog #: 12K1029 Artist/Album Info: Air Curtain is the latest release from keiichi sugimoto's (minamo, fonica) solo project Fourcolor.Following his release Water Mirror (Apestaartje, 2004) in which Sugimoto created gradually evolving works using guitar drones and resonances, Air Curtain was composed to be a more diverse album and an exploration of different processes. Still utilizing the signature drones and ambient washes of guitar notes and resonances, Air Curtain finds movement in implied rhythmic edits, synthetic percussive accents and more structured playing techniques. The results are engaging, picturesque works that swell and flow with an air of warmth and transluscence, layered with subtle shifts and sparks that demand attentive listening and further establish Sugimoto's place as one of the genre's strongest emerging talents. * >>> Stafraenn_Hakon_and_Dialect_-_Tour-Ltd.Ed.-CD-2004-BFHMP3 Release Date: 2004-10-09 Label Info and Catalog #: RESTOUR1 Artist/Album Info: A special six track, 40 minute tour CD featuring all exclusive and new material from both artists. Christophe Terrettaz, as Ozymandias, returns with "Les Doutes Eternels" ("Eternal Doubts"), which was inspired by an Edward Sheriff Curtis' exhibition. Here the classical Swiss pianist transcribed the emotions the exhibit inspired in him, transporting their sad resonance into the modern world, and in turn creating a somber yet melodic reflection of humanity: how mankind treats its planet and its fellow man. Stark in it's structure yet warm in tonality, "Les Doutes Eternels" is an achievement in contemplative aestheticism. Previously Ozymandias has released a collaboration with Elijah's Mantle, and three solo releases through World Serpent Distribution. * >>> VA-Flowers_Made_Of_Snow-2CD-2004-FWYH Release Date: 2004-10-10 Label Info and Catalog #: Cold Meat Industry http://www.coldmeat.se Artist/Album Info: Well, in a perfect world no-one would need any further introduction to the fundamental institution that Cold Meat Industry has become, but nevertheless; 7 years have past since the previous double CD label-sampler "The Absolute Supper" in 1997, and the groundbreaking success that followed, and it is consequently due time to introduce, seduce and degenerate a whole new generation of listeners with the release of something new and absolutely improved - Flowers made of Snow. Once again we are glad to present a double CD-sampler sold at a single-CD price, featuring an extensive full-colour 16-pages booklet with presentations of all participating bands, some new - some old, but always equally intriguing. Rotting jailcells, past insanity and the crumbling domes of the other side are a few of the many eerily twisted images that this evocative music compels. There is a constant dark majesty that forcefully propels the message of inevitability: The colorful illusion people spend most of their lives in is fragile as a rose petal, and just as easily shattered in Seishinbyouin. With brilliant use of the full spectrum of dystopia, this will surely leave no one unscathed. The album is filled with dark ambient soundscapes, haunting symphonic intensities and engulfing atmospheres that let you get inside the twisted psyche of the total other. One can but wonder at the twisted mind of the tortured soul that made this vision spring to ghastly unlife. * MOVIES +++ Lovers.2004.LiMiTED.DVDRip.XviD-BiEN Release Date: 2004-10-03 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0385004/ It's also been tagged as House.of.Flying.Daggers If you liked Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Hero (Ying Xiong) you'll love that one. While they were initially influenced by original dub recordings by Lee "Scratch" Perry, King Tubby and Augustus Pablo, Woodbridge and Sprosen have continued to evolve their own sound. "Option" magazine explained, "through minimal manipulation, (Alpha and Omega) deliver the listener to a place of great sonic peace". According to "The Wire", "The compelling presences at the hear of these airy sonic worlds have a harder edge than some of their ancestors'. "Pulse!" dug even deeper into their explanation of Alpha and Omega's sound, which they described as, "massively thunderous bass lines, galloping drum tracks and a willingness to tastefully adorn dubs with digital flutes and various electronic sounding washes". Bassist Woodbridge, one of reggae's few woman instrumentalists, and keyboardist Sprosen began working together after meeting in the southwestern coastal city of Plymouth in Devon, England. Both musicians had previously played in various reggae bands and Sprosen had worked with the Roaring Lion Sound System. Pooling their resources, Woodbridge and Sprosen spent several years recording rhythm tracks prior to releasing their debut album, Daniel in the Lion's Den, as a cassette that they released on their own label, A & O, in 1990. Two years later, the duo signed with Greensleeves, keeping the imprint A &O as part of the agreement. Alpha and Omega have continued to collaborate with other British reggae bands. The duo supplied rhythm tracks for Jah Shaka and appeared on the indie-dance band Flowered Up's single, "The Reggae Song". The duo was accompanied by the Disciples on their 1997 album, Sacred Art of Dub; Mystical Things followed three years later and Dub Philosophy appeared in summer 2001." - www.allmusic.com Related URLs: http://www.alphaandomega.co.uk http://www.alphaandomega.co.uk/discshowmeapurpose.html http://www.discogs.com/artist/Alpha+%26+Omega * >>> Errol_Scorcher-Rastafire-LP-1978-YARD Release Date: 2004-10-13 Label Info and Catalog #: United Artists 4527-078 Related URLs: http://www.roots-archives.com/artist/234 http://www.roots-archives.com/release/1059 Album/Artist info: Can't tell much about Errol Scorcher, except he was a very good friend of Eek-A-Mouse and got killed in the 80s. The review below relates to the vinyl pressings and doesn't touch the CD bonus tracks, but still... "Remakes of classical reggae riddims are no rarity - every month, one or two crucial riddims come out in a new outfit, some of them more, some of them less good. But what about ska & rocksteady riddims, the ultimate foundation of reggae as we know it today? Unfortunately the world hasn't seen many riddims of that era remade today. Producers aren't willing to dare experiments and therefor prefer sticking to wellknown stuff. Other than Pow Pow Productions from Cologne/Germany. After their first successfull selection, the Celebrate Riddim, they come up with a remake of one of the most memorable Instrumentals from the ska/rocksteady era - the rhythm track of Desmond Dekker's Shanty Town. Unlike many foundation riddim remakes, which try to re-trim the riddim to nowadays fashion tempo-wise, Pow Pow succeeded to preserve the original pace of the riddim, giving it a very authentic touch. On the other hand, the instruments of the remake were given much reverberation, giving them a very clear and bouncing sound, without loosing the original pace of the 60's riddim. Tune-wise, the riddim is a singer's choice this time. Even the deejays voicing pon it kept a very melodical touch with their tunes. Here you see some of the old Celebrate artists like Turbulence and Jah Mason, but this time they are supported by a whole bunch of other cultural singers. Pow Pow managed to get big artists like Sizzla, Anthony B, Luciano and even the great Jack Radics upon this selection, as well as Tanya Stephens, who is back on track harder than ever after a long pause, and Daddy Rings, well-known for his Weed Haffi Bun and numerous collaborations with wellknown German singjay Gentleman. New talents weren't forgotten here as well, besides THE upcoming Turbulence there is some more fresh talent in persons of Elijah Prophet, Sugar Black and Lebancoleh. It is noticable that all the tunes keep up a nice vibe lyrically. Even Sizzla, notorious for his controversial and not-always-conscious lyrics, is keeping it strictly niceness here. Neither heavy slackness, nor crude bun dis bun dat lyrics can be found on this selection, rather pure conscious vibes, depicting the faith in Jah or denouncing the society's Injustice. A clear highlight for me is the Luciano tune, probably the best tune I heard from him in the past year. He's calling for more love and devotion, partly recycling the refrain melody of the original Shanty Town tune. Ethiopia Awakes is another big tune by Turbulence, in which he rather shows his singer Abilities than the Bobo-deejay styles he was dropping earlier, and he masters the new singing style very well. Another big tune is... well let's say they're all great tunes. All the tunes convinced me, it seems that the uplifting riddim gave the artists even more energy to perform like I heard them perform seldomly on other riddims. I already gave Celebrate 5 points back then, and I wish I could give Shanty Town even more... Never giving up to make the audience dance, Enduser aim this time at the belly rather than the feet, and invite his fans to an intercultural wedding. While the groom is the same noisy, loud bad boy, the bride is coming from the higher ranks of society and wears henna. "Bollywood breaks" is Enduser's homage to the bhangra music of the Hindi film industry, whose singing is here mixed with his infectious breaks and distorted beats for maximum efficiency. Drawing from two styles of music that could hardly be any more different, weren't it for their raw dance appeal, Standafer comes here with some of the catchiest and seductive tunes you will hear till your next reincarnation. Added to the flavour is extra curry by Larvae (who have played live on several occasions with Enduser) and the break wiz-kid Mad e.p., as well as by Line47, the other founder of Enduser's Sonicterror label. Bill Laswell, an ace musician and producer, has become quite adept at producing intriguing soundscapes that never fail to challenge and please the listener. Here, he works with percussionists Karsh Kale and Abdou Mboup and keyboardist Bernie Worrell in addition to Wobble, who co-authored four of the six tracks with Laswell. At their foundation, all the tracks have a genesis in a Laswellian techno bass sound which, unlike basic techno bass, overlays elements that are ambient and avant-garde rather than retro. Other tracks, including "System Malfunction," also morph in and out of compelling drum'n'bass interludes. With Laswell, stylistic parameters are there to be transcended in the name of groove. But for all the sonic layers, the tracks have a minimalist feel, which only adds to the intrigue. * >>> Goldfrapp_-_Wonderful_Electric-DVDA-(Mute)-2004-BCC Release Date: 2004-10-08 Label Info: Mute Artist/Album Info: Goldfrapp has releases their first full length DVD, titled "Wonderful Electric - Live In London" the DVD features two very different sold out live London shows, one from the dates surrounding the latest album Black Cherry and one from the time of the debut album, Felt Mountain. The releases of the EP "Fat Camp Feva/Disconnected" and the album "Disconnected" at the end of March followed the extensive "Acoustics" tour through a good 50 cities in Europe, USA and Japan. For the first time, they took a band along, namely vocalist Enik and bass player Andreas Kellner from Munich as core members and additional guest musicians at times, such as New Yorker MC Tes. The two Rosenheim natives, Michael Fakesch and Chris de Luca, are now putting out another EP featuring two tracks from the album and two new pieces. Once again, Funkstorung hold fast to their dual principle of filling the aural medium with songs on the one hand and (hiphop) tracks on the other. DJ fodder, yes; VJ fodder, double yes: for interested members of the press, there is also an exclusive preview of the four fantastic videos to this EP from the book/DVD project, "Isolated. Funkstorung Triple Media", which will be presented for the first time by !K7 and the Berlin design publishers "Die Gestalten" at the Frankfurt Book Fair - more information on this coming soon: watch this space. “Moon Addicted”, the quiet hit of the album and the new song with Enik, "Generation Fat", are good examples of how a certain "Radioheadedness" synchronizes the otherwise fundamentally different musical philosophy of an exceptional talent like Enik with the electronic masterminds of Funkstorung. The bass lines for "Generation Fat" by Andreas Kellner provide just the right amount of “strumming” in the driving garage-jazz. That Funkstorung's rehearsal room is still primarily located on the hard drive also holds true in this respect, even if it's not necessarily audible. "Chopping Heads", with the New Yorker MC Tes, really delivers the goods with those split-hop chops that leave behind an imprint of the Funkstorung logo with every drum beat. For "Basic P.P.O. Blues", hacker-boys Fakesch and de Luca hunt the electronic spit of Canadian beatboxer Quadraceptor through a data cable, to which the rhymes of MC Doseone from Oakland stick like a trojan virus. Quadraceptor, from the Ninja Tune stable, and Doseone, co-founder of the hiphop label Anticon, had no idea they would meet in the curiosity cabinet of Funkstorung's plug-ins. The bass, by the way, was recorded by Andreas Kellner during the tour - this time just before a concert in Seattle. * >>> Keith_Fullerton_Whitman-Schoner_Flussengel-KRANK071-Vinyl-2004-UKi Release Date: 2004-10-12 Label Info and Catalog #: Kranky (KRANK071) Artist/Album Info: Sch÷ner Flussengel (pronounced "shooner floos-engel") is the follow up to Keith Fullerton Whitman's Antithesis LP release from April, 2004. Packaged in a faux-dark metal album jacket with suitably intricate gothic script, Sch÷ner Flu▀engel is a dip into a cold, stygian stream that splashes and flows around the listener. Keith Fullerton Whitman's musical interests have taken a course towards solo experimentation of late. Sch÷ner Flu▀engel was begun as Whitman took a lecturer position at Harvard and gained access to the University's sound labs. As Whitman worked on his Multiples album project for kranky, the material that coalesced into Sch÷ner Flu▀engel required a separate album. The album title is German for beautiful river angel. Vocalist Eva Puyuelo Muns returns with beautiful, subdued singing in Catalan. The cover art by Maya Hayuk says it all—these dreamy soundscapes are sexy and stylized—a far-cry from Herren’s hip hop inspired projects. On the other hand, there is plenty of unusual production. On “Interludio Incongreto,” Scott’s vocals are sampled and distorted into clips of sound. “Sota L'Aigⁿa” is more straight-forward pop, with a familiar-sounding melody over classical guitar and electronic beats. Demα Vinor└ has a lovely combination of stuttering electronics and brisk beats among Eva’s gentle vocal harmonies. “No Puedo de Cidir” is a short and sweet instrumental with wonderfully funky bass. Finally, “Equipatge de Flors Seques” is a meandering journey through pulses of strings, subdued synths, and Scott’s singing with an undercurrent of undecipherable voices swirling in a sonic sea. Sadly, Scott indicated on his Web site that this is probably his final collaboration with Eva. But what a farewell! * >>> Stafraenn_Hakon-Ventill-Poki-RESLP009-Vinyl-2004-UKi Release Date: 2004-10-06 Label Info and Catalog #: Resonant Belgium (RESLP 009) Artist/Album Info: After two massively respected full-lengths on Resonant, the much-lauded Stafraenn Hakon is about to step up a gear or two. Ventil / Poki features Stafraenn’s first new material in two years - on the back of the success and acclaim that met the aforementioned "Skvettir Edik a Ref" and "I Astaandi Rjupunnar", both of which were old albums deservedly seeing light of day for the first time beyond his native Iceland. Whereas those two were effectively home recordings using basic instruments and means, "Ventill/Poki" is the end result of a week in a studio in England with the help of fellow Resonant artist Dialect, using live bass and drums sounding like the product of a band rather than one guy. That said, it retains the feel of his previous work, and shimmers along similar territory to Sigur Ros and Ulrich Schnauss – quietly euphoric and unashamedly romantic. Clever huh? The faces behind the project have a history of performing in many bands, Hood and The Remote Viewer being but two fine examples. There’s Craig and Andrew delicately weaving together these exceptionally moving pieces, while elaine sings along in a fluttering, beautifully broken manner. Their music takes in numerous instruments, from dusty sweeping drums to ageing accordions, from sterling vintage piano to warm padding bass, from tapped windblown bells to unconsciously puffed melodica. Pan over to the other side of the studio and you discover old bits of malfunctioning electronic machinery, drum-machines that don’t quite work as they should, banks of amnesiac samplers trying to regain their memories, mixers that have started to confuse left with right. * >>> Vivian_Jones-Red_Lights_Got_A_Light_(12_Inch_SHAKA859)-Reissue_VLS-2004-RAC Release Date: 2004-10-10 Label Info and Catalog #: Jah Shaka (SHAKA859) Artist/Album Info: Again a nice reissue from jah shaka label...check this sweet voice...luvely! * >>> VA--Fabriclive._17_-_Aim_-_Radio_Mix_CDr-2004-AES Release Date: 2004-10-07 Artist/Album Info: Featuring Tony D, Boards Of Canada, Lewis Parker, Ice Cube,..and many others..this mix is absolutely wicked! a must have! a selection of downbeat Latin, hip-hop and funk cuts peppered with the occasional faster number. From their very beginning, their music didn't conform to any commonly held notions about rock & roll -- not even those of the countercultures. Inspired more by 20th century classical music than Chuck Berry, their closest contemporaries were Frank Zappa or possibly the Velvet Underground. Yet their music was more serious and inaccessible than either of those artists. Instead of recording tight pop songs or satire, Can experimented with noise, synthesizers, nontraditional music, cut-and -paste techniques, and, most importantly, electronic music; each album marked a significant step forward from the previous album, investigating new territories that other rock bands weren't interested in exploring. Throughout their career, Can's lineup was fluid, featuring several different vocalists over the years; the core bandmembers remained keyboardist Irmin Schmidt, drummer Jaki Leibezeit, guitarist Michael Karoli, and bassist Holger Czukay. During the '70s, they were extremely prolific, recording as many as three albums a year at the height of their career. Apart from a surprise U.K. Top 30 hit in 1978 -- "I Want More" -- they were never much more than a cult band; even critics had a hard time appreciating their music. Can debuted in 1969 with the primitive, bracing Monster Movie, the only full-length effort to feature American-born vocalist Malcolm Mooney. 1970's Soundtracks, a collection of film music, introduced Japanese singer Kenji "Damo" Suzuki, and featured "Mother Sky," one of the group's best-known compositions. With 1971's two-record set Tago Mago, Can hit their visionary stride, shedding the constraints of pop forms and structures to explore long improvisations, angular rhythms, and experimental textures. 1972's Ege Bamayasi refined the approach, and incorporated an increasingly jazz-like sensibility into the mix; Future Days, recorded the following year as Suzuki's swan song, traveled even further afield into minimalist, almost ambient territory. With 1974's Soon Over Babaluma, Can returned to more complicated and abrasive ground, introducing dub rhythms as well as Karoli's shrieking violin. 1976's Unlimited Edition and 1977's Saw Delight proved equally restless, and drew on a wide range of ethnic musics. When the band split in 1978 following the success of the album Flow Motion and the hit "I Want More," they left behind a body of work that has proven surprisingly groundbreaking; echoes of Can's music can be heard in Public Image Limited, the Fall, and Einstⁿrzende Neubauten, among others. As with much aggressive and challenging experimental music, Can's music can be difficult to appreciate, yet their albums offer some of the best experimental rock ever recorded. http://www.spoonrecords.com/ * >>> Ajattara_-_Tyhjyys-FI-Promo-CD-2004-QTXMp3 Release Date: 2004-10-12 Label Info and Catalog #: Spikefarm Artist/Album Info: The new album by Finnish black metal act Ajattara! http://www.ajattara.cjb.net/ * >>> Omnium_Gatherum-Years_in_Waste-Promo-2004-PMS Release Date: 2004-10-02 Label Info and Catalog #: Nuclear Blast Artist/Album Info: OMNIUM GATHERUM is a "melodic" death metal combo from the wastes of Finland, hailing from Karhula, the sub-urban and metal capital of Kotka. OG produce complex but accessible death metal that incorporates elements of thrash and tradl metal without ever sounding derivate. Top quality Finnish steel, in other words. It has said also that if you mix At The Gates, Katatonia, Death and Judas Priest there's the recipe to OMNIUM GATHERUM stuff! OMNIUM GATHERUM came into being somewhere in time at autumn 1996. After a year of hard training and song writing OG recorded their first demo tape "Forbidden Decay" containing atmospheric melodical death metal in the spring -97. Following self-financed releases were the OG cd-ep in -98 and "Gardens, Temples…this Hell!" mcd in -99. Especially "Gardens.." started to arouse much positive stir in the metal underground, but no good record deals were offered yet. Fourth promo-demo "Wastrel" was released on May `01 and it was infact the first one which was promoted widely to companies and magazines. The band found it`s own identity in this release and the line-up was now almost completed; only keyboard player have changed since the days of "Wastrel". It brought to OG lots of words of praise like its predecessor as reviewers praised the originality of the music, with the review in Terrorizer summing it up quite nicely: "…there is a sense of something special happening here. Technically the sextet have got it all worked out, but if I could apply the word 'beautiful' to metal songs then I would do so here because they are as complete as would be expected from any top class album." In December 2001, a new and growing label RAGE OF ACHILLES Records from England offered a deal that sounded sensible and after signing it OG was sent straight to the Sonic Pump studios in late December to re -record "Wastrel" demo to be released as a debut MCD. The title was changed to "Steal the light" so that no one would mistake it for the demo. The mcd containing 5 songs of quality Finnish melodeath was released in September 2002. It achieved great reviews and feedback all around the world and Kerrang! Magazine even voted OG to "TOP21 bands you should hear". In August 2002 OG entered the Sonic Pump studios again to record their first full-length album called "Spirits and August Light". The album was released in April `03 thru Rage Of Achilles Records and the album got licensed also to Japan by Hot Rockin`Records and to South-America by Hellion Records. "Spirits.." album proved starting from the fast thrashy opener piece "Writhen" to the last slow oppressive "It Shines" that there's still request to melodic death metal record without those new wave clean vocal choruses and give a real 9-piece lesson about groovy violent Finnish rage with feel! …and now the band is really in it's own way, nobody can't claim the band anymore to be usual Scandinavian melodic death metal band! The "Spirits and August Light" album made it again even to greater reviews than the previous ones and there has been given even some "album of the month" titles to the album. The metal media have praised the band to be "A new wave" of death metal as for example Metal Hammer magazine ranked OG on their feature "A new wave of European death metal" among the bands Opeth, Haunted, In Flames, Soilwork and Red Harvest. Here's what the article said about OG: "Classically inclined operatic metal at its most snobbish. Lead breaks to make metal gods Judas Priest weep, and vocals that lift them out of any black metal pit. If Opeth are the Pink Floyd of this scene, then Omnium are likely to turn into Rush at the very least. Hammer recommends: "spirits and august light"" After the album release OG have played as many gigs as possible and have opened the gigs for example for such big bands as Children Of Bodom and Zyklon. The band made also a music video from the song "Writhen" at spring `03, which was directed by Ville Salonen. The new album "Years In Waste" is now bred and is waiting to be unleashed at the end of the year 2004! Again, musically the next level is entered! http://www.omniumgatherum.org/ * >>> OST-Paul_Giovanni-The_Wicker_Man_(1973)-2002-SER Release Date: 2004-10-12 Label Info and Catalog #: Silva Screen Records Artist/Album Info: The re-mastered soundtrack to what has been called "one of the most innovative and provocative British films ever produced". In just four years Office Building has developed into one of the most Critically acclaimed groups in Finland. After their first album, To See Only Shadows (Fonal Records, 2000), the band became a huge cult favourite in Alternative circles and their position was only strengthened by their second effort, Across The Sleeping Seas (Aisti Records, 2001). The third album, The Sun Hit The Water (Aisti Records, 2003), is a result of a natural progression, the band's most melodic and accessible album to date. As Soundi, the biggest monthly music magazine in Finland, put it: "An Album impossible not to fall in love with." Throughout the years Office Building has drawn favourable comparisons: people hear the same kind of quality in singer-songwriter Janne Laurila's songs as they hear in Neil Young's, Ron Sexsmith's or even Hank Williams' output. With the new album, Office Building explores its boundaries even further: among the best tracks are She Appeared To Me (a timeless sixties love song reminiscent of the late great Roy Orbison), The Door To The Room Of Your Heart (a fast and furious gypsy-rocker in a genuine Bad Seeds style), a radio hit Crystal Clear (imagine The Smiths writing a happy tune) and Keep Walking On (the perfect country ballad). Office Building continues to make music that is, in another journalist's words, "familiar but unique". Or as yet another hack wrote, "music for music itself, without pressure of the past". Blending these elements together, he creates a smooth vibe for both techno and house audiences. Jussi-Pekka started DJing in 1994 when a friend taught him to spin. Acoustic instruments and machines meet and invite, at times, a voice, to generate an electro mix of entrancing melodies and surprising rhythms. Valseuses revisits the popular and romantic dances from the beginning of the 20th century to our days, highlighting the talent of Olaf as a composer: Gymnopedie, Menuet, Valse, Bolero celebrates a new dimension in electronics, so modern. Dancing, is the lovers langage and this album is inspired by love and all the feelings it can inspire: joy, spleen, sadness, anger, hope these emotions are blended, transporting us all along these eleven tracks. So turn on the sound, close your eyes, relax let your imagination guide you. This music is yours, that of your inner film, your inner self : these feelings that transcendes you from Olaf is in each and everyone of us.Olaf Hund created the label Musiques Hybrides in 1994. He began his project of musical series, leavingbehind him all cliches of styles and categories. It would be wise to evoke moods, atmosphere, emotions and colors, in order to understand how he divides his tracks into these series. His revelation to the public comes with his performance at the Aquaplanning Festival in 1999.the big moment of Aquaplanning 1999 for the general opinion was the Olaf Hund concerto (Liberation). In 2001, he gathered the Kitch Kitch series into his first album (Kitch Kitch: Musiques Hybrides / Virgin). Olaf Hund latest effort has got everything: hints of Blondie, strutting hip-hop, splashes of Kraftwerk, Quickstep, Cajun hoedowns, space-age Moogisms and manic tubular bells (NME). Olaf composed the soundtrack of Cyrk 13, a show by Philippe that toured Europe for 2 years. He multiplied his collaborations and remixes with Leonard de Leonard, Louise Vertigo, Rubin Steiner, Scratch Massive, DJ Seep, Omar from Oslo, Plaid, Schneider TM, Gonzales, Tarwater, Taraf de Haidouk. In 2003, he founded FreeComplex, a pluri-disciplinary collective of various artistes. Eversince he toured Brazil, he added corporal performances to his concerts through his collaboration with Solaine Caillat √ a circus performance artiste. The two interludes, "Interludio Inconcreto" (which begins the eight-song EP) and "Interludio Humedo" (which leads into the seven-and-a-half minute claustrophobic closer "Equipatge De Flors Seques"), sound as if Herren's Prefuse alter-ego had gotten a hold of his Savath and Savalas recordings. In fact, Herren uses his knob-twiddling skills much more in the foreground here than anywhere on Apropa't; the final song is more a sound collage designed to evoke cinematic emotion than anything resembling even the most abstract of Herren and Puyelo's collaborations." - PrefixMag.com review blip The follow-up "ep" to Apropa't. Where does the line between EP and LP lie? Ok, so 28 minutes of music is a bit short for most "albums," but plenty of punk bands get away calling less a "full length." Having spent many years studying music at the prestigious Cal Arts Academy, Morley has taken his training and turned it on its head. Instead of merely sampling the instruments he has so painstakingly learned, he resynthesizes, filters and destroys them until few traces are left on the resulting sound recordings. Every track starts with a sound base and whether it be piano, strings or percussion only a hint of the original sound is left. All we hear are tones, trapped reverberations, the sounds that we are taught to ignore. Morley is better known as one half of electronica act 'Yasume'. His gritty percussive structures helped carry their album 'Where We're From The Birds Sing A Pretty Song' to great critical acclaim in 2003. It comes as quite a surprise then that in his debut solo record Morley dispenses with percussion almost entirely to make a record of drifting, crystalline beauty. He considers this as a far more personal work than Yasume, which was more of an outlet for his ADD induced beat creation skills. It is when working by himself he feels he can express his love of musique concrete and abstract sound design. The album opens in typically classical style, with the sounds of a laptop orchestra tuning their samples on 'Premonition'. This sets the tone of the record perfectly as it drifts seamlessly from Xenakis-influenced electrical drones into the cold, precise digital manipulations explored previously by artists such as Carsten Nicolai. It stops for breath mid-way through with 'Beetelguise', a wonderful reinterpretation of Danny Elfman's influential theme, proving that there is room for a wry smile in the po-faced world of the avante garde. As the album draws to a satisfying close with the mysterious 'Untitled' we are treated to a piece of field recording, delicately manipulated to brush the senses rather than barrage them with information. This kind of subtlety is rarely achieved, yet Gabriel Morley manages effortlessly. Such simple yet involving beauty comes around far too infrequently, which is what makes 'It's All Just Another Aspect Of Mannerism' such an essential work. http://www.soundmangle.com/ http://www.typerecords.com/artists/full.php?id=22 * >>> VA-Newsense_Recordings_Sampler-CD-2004-UKi Release Date: 2004-10-12 Label Info and Catalog #: Newsense Recordings Artist/Album Info: This sampler is a collection of tracks taken from future releases on Newsense Recordings. The music buying public love to be reminded of the good times; the old times; the familiar. It’s the reason we've had The Beatles, The Clash and The Stooges clones plague our minds, radio, newspapers, TV, and our souls for the past twenty-five years. It’s the reason guitar based music has driven itself into a rut; become stale, bland, tired and overblown. Time for an overhaul. But that’s most bands, and it’s clear that 65 Days of Static have no intention of being some retro-fuck entity. Nestling themselves in a scene loosely called math-rock or post-rock, they appear to have broken the golden alt-rock rule of not using computers, samplers, electronics etc (it’s not real music you know). Instead of sounding like some scrappy, mix-genre soundclash, 65 Days of Static take your pre-conceptions and smash them into a million pieces. 'Retreat! Retreat!' swoops in with a glorious, spine tingling glockenspiel intro, which gives way to a riff that is so wide, so heavy, so burnt that it hurts; it's heart wrenching stuff. 'The Cat Is a Landmine' weaves in and out like Venetian Snares vs a monged Godspeed! You Black Emperor. 'Aren’t We All Running' uses a moribund prog-rock piano intro and calmly sits back and lets the guitars and drums (the drummer clearly having eight arms on this track) walk in and bludgeon you with reckless abandon. It is pure passion, and it’s clear that 'The Fall of Math' was created to worship the beauty of music. Radiohead took three albums to become this adventurous and IDM is still too afraid to include live instruments on this level; when the Mercury Music Prize comes around the judges won’t go anywhere near this. Go home, take your play safe indie-punk records and burn them. 65 Days of Static have their heads in 2007 and everyone else is thirty years behind…… Magnificent. * ________________________________________________________________________________ . .:[+] BOSS [+]:. . ________________________________________________________________________________ >>> Exzakt_-_The_Second_Wave_E.P._(SAT021)-Vinyl-2004-KTMP3 Release Date: 2004-10-14 Label Info and Catalog #: Satamile Records SAT021 Artist/Album Info: From Scape One to Heuristic Audio, passing through EMS, Metroneem or Freezie Freekie, it's always hard to succeed to the long list of talents signed to Satamile. Yet, Larry McCormick aka Exzakt (Monotone, Psi49net, Nuff Nuff, Datapunk) realises here a real feat, offering to Andrew A. Price's wonderful label one of its best releases to date. In three incredible dancefloor cuts, Anthony Rother's partner on Netzwerk Florida project puts the lights on a destructive Miami Electro Bass sound thanks to the use of powerful bass lines. On A side, "The Second Wave" introduces an industrial rhythm embellished by gloomy and funky lyrics. Then comes a break based upon a dark and ultra aggressive string. The track goes on again in a drums bubbling. At last, in the middle of the tune, a deep and noir melody seizes progressively of the whole till the end. Huge! On the flip, "Sub.Sonic Base" uses the same components heard on the longplayer, without falling into emotion. Tempo goes faster, voice is filtered by an impressive vocoder and groove sounds duplicated. A perfect skill of the machines and an incredible sense for the dancefloor turn the track into another success. At last, on the contrary of the first two cuts, "End Of The Pain" concludes the 12'' with a melancholic and minimal note, enhanced by looped lyrics ("Joy And Pain, It's One And The Same") under depressive melody. An EP that will not leave your flight case before a long time. "Sigma Delta" begins A side with a sumptuous deep and melancholic construction where sweet melodies and feverish 808 combine perfectly. In a similar register, "Simulacra" develops some beautiful languorous and sad strings for a straight downtempo tune. On the flip come two magnificent and futuristic pieces: "Halcyon Drift" in a minimal vein and "I Program", a dark and hot dancefloor hit enhanced by a Detroit style synths line. After the incredible buzz generated around their first release ("The Hydraulix EP") last year, Ashrock and Jimi The Genius (Richard Zarate & Jimi Merlo) strike back to spread terror on the dancefloors, signing the second output of Kuad Records, their own label. Close to the sound developed by its neighbours Exzakt or Jackal & Hyde, Miami based duo distillates here a brilliant dark and efficient electrobass on "Future Leaders", first track of the A side that comes along with a "Bonus Beat" shorter and condensed version. Rough kick, robotic rhythms and vocoded lyrics, Merlyn, the heavyweight Breakbeat producer and cofounder of Kuad deploys an impressive gear on B-side to turn "Dominate" (and it's a capella a la "This Is The Sound Of Underground") one of the summer syncopated killer tunes. Indeed a devastating 12'' but nothing to compare with the forthcoming Hydraulix release on Touchin' Bass. * >>> VA-Jungle_Sound_the_Bassline_Strikes_Back-2CD-2004-XTC Release Date: 2004-10-09 Label Info and Catalog #: Breakbeat Kaos BBK001CD Artist/Album Info: New Drum & Bass album out on Breakbeat Kaos (Adam F and DJ Fresh's Label) CD1 features a large selection of 2004 dance floor anthems that have been rinsed out by all the major DJ's throughout the year. Smoother, the original mix has a similar NY feel funky yet druggy (long breaks and much delayed vocals), it is perfect for the afterhours Ibiza dens. http://www.psyshop.com/shop/Vinyls/aut/aut1ep050.html * >>> Lynx-Effected_EP-Vinyl-2004-MNS Release date: 2004-10-02 Label Info and Catalog #: Gravitation GRAV16 Artist/Album Info: The British producer Steve McGrath aka Lynx launches in September a fresh EP on Gravitation Records, containing four original productions. Effected EP is a material which reflects Lynx's conception regarding music, his feelings and his effort for the improvement and evolution of this musical genre. On the A side two authentic progressive tracks. The first one is "Danger", an obscure progressive, profound and dark. We enter allat once in the dubious atmosphere of the track, which gradually advances, even starting to frighten us with its bizarre sounds and the scary melodic line. The synths are uncomplicated, little but very obvious, adding up, alongside a few tribals and a deep and dark bass line, an air of mystery and juicy, even fear, which can evolve in "danger". A few somber and effected vocals emphasizes this air, which wastes on the break down, for reinstalling itself after a while, more deeper and darker. After a short breakdown, the path is changing for a short time to breaks, and then back to the first phase of the track, when appeared the progressive, which also ends up Lynx's production. The other track, from this side, is a surplus of sounds for completing the A side;"Hallucination" contains a few strings and continuous effects, with no melody, no rhythm, chaotically arranged, resulting an ambient noise with a few tents of melody. The AA1 track, "Effect" seems to be the most successful track on this EP, bringing a sweet tribal house sound combined with progressive house. After a short introduction, the tribal rhythm makes its appearance, animating and warming up the atmosphere. But in short time, the situation changes, at the entrance of the bass line and the continuous and melancholic riffs, which changes the track into a sweet and melodic progressive house, with a warm vibe. The synths appear also in a short time, and after a miraculous and long bass line disappear little by little. By a warm, meek, curing and relaxing melody, "Effect" seems to be a sonant hallucination, like all the things except the substance. Getting rid of this nostalgia, we enter into an archaic universe, a universe of the playful melody and of the open and optimistic synths. "First Light" ends up this E.P., not before offering a unique sound, somewhere between downtempo and ambient, bringing a fresh, warm and benefic melodic line. Who doesn't love the nature, doesn't love the music, and those landscapes which don't awake in us some musical representations, can't be memories. Because, this EP composes real landscapes, composes real spaces. In a sublime moment of inspiration, the producer Steve McGrath succeeded not only with the track "Effect" to add up a splash in the progressive house universe. Another release which assures us that the label Gravitation doesn't play games with music, taking seriously its task of discovering new talents and releasing their productions. http://www.juno.co.uk/IP/IF155912-01.htm * >>> VA_-_Lhiannon_Sidhe-2004-UPE Release date: 2004-10-04 Label Info and Catalog #: Mistress of Evil MOE6601 Artist/Album Info: With this album the Mistress of Evil would like to welcome you to...a new world of psychedelic music, the fusion of an already explosive dark sound and power with the birth of new waves of psychedelic energy- coming straight from the birthplace of the modern psychedelic movement, San Francisco! The M.o.E project draws on the powerful feminine energies that are so often suppressed and neglected within the psytrance community. Inspired by a gathering in a magical forest and a series of old myths, the name of our first comp is: Lhiannon Sidhe. http://www.mistressofevil.com http://www.psyshop.com/shop/CDs/moe/moe1cd001.html * >>> Gandalf_-_Reflection_Masterworks_(1986-1990)-1991-UPE Release date: 2004-10-07 Label Info and Catalog #: Eurock ECD-2007 Artist/Album Info: This is a best of collection featuring selections, by Gandalf himself, from his four Sony albums, The Universal Play, From Source to Sea, Invisible Power and Symphonic Landscapes. It is a fine introduction to the second stage of Gandalf`s musical development ("Fantasia" is a good introduction to the first stage), showing his expanding use of synthesisers and electric guitars along with acoustic instruments. The sounds range from multi-instrumental such as "Refuge Island" to lush and fully orchestrated with a full symphony orchestra such as "Mirages Upon a Desert of Sand (Part IV)" to purely electronic such as "Cosmic Circle Dance," with Gandalf showing his mastery in all of these styles. The selections are generally more towards the upbeat end of Gandalf`s often dreamy style: even here he`s less rocky than either David Arkenstone or Kitaro, although, like these contemporaries he gives his productions great musical texture and interesting, if gentle, melodies. This particular collection may be hard to find now but some second-hand copies show up occasionally on the newsgroups, as the converted buy his individual albums and sell the compilations. (Ian C. In fact, that very magazine accompanied him through Greece and dedicated a feature to his DJTravels last summer. Dedicated followers of this DC-based jock have packed the houses at Pacha in Spain, Israel and Argentina, Bedrock and Turnmills in London, Homeland, Crobar in Chicago, Twilo, Sound Factory and the opening party for Avalon in New York City. He rocked the floors of Asia super-clubs Zouk in Singapore and Womb in Tokyo. Palash enjoyed a coveted headlining slot at the 2003 end of season, closing night party at Space in Ibiza. His set left such a lasting, positive impression that Palash will return to open Space's summer season in 2004. Palash has held court in all of the great arenas where the drum leads the dance. His sensibility in the DJ booth and in the studio has evolved from the accumulated wisdom of watching and manipulating the effects of sound on crowds around the world. Able to nimbly switch between CD and vinyl formats while DJing, Palash's range of music isn't limited by a single 75-record capacity record crate; typically he has over 300 songs at his disposal. He wields an ever-evolving modern primitive blend of the dark drums of tribal, progressive, pitched-down techno punctuated by evocative vocals and melodic tracers. His mixing is as smooth and straightforward as the lines on a classic Jaguar. 7 Magazine has proclaimed Palash is "the most exciting American export since Deep Dish." But before he played a single record outside of the US, Palash had already proven his ability to pack dancefloors. While he was getting his start in DC back in the early '90s, he revitalized one club night after another with booming tribal house and enthusiastic, thirsty crowds. An early success in a 2000-capacity room rivaled the club's other top night, one promoted by an equally dedicated entrepreneurial entertainer by the name of Sean "Puffy" Combs. Naturally, Palash launched his own vinyl imprint, Addictive Records, to create a home for his productions and favorite tunes. With a penchant for percussive, groove-oriented tribal house, the Addictive releases struck a chord with the world's best DJs. As is usually the case, the UK labels acted on the buzz quickly. In 2002, Palash dropped a mix for Tide Recordings. Following in the well-heeled grooves of previous DJs in the series Steve Lawler, Lee Burridge and Danny Howells, Tide:Edit:07 showcased Palash's warm, tribal tech-house. The creative flames were fueled with remix work for major and indie labels. Palash's work on the remix of Celeda's "The Underground" succeeded on an underground and above ground level: it went to #1 on the Billboard chart. John Digweed gave the nod and hired him for a remix of his own "Voices" for Bedrock. Then came mixes for Kylie's "In Your Eyes" and Steve Lawler's "Rise In," to name a few. After receiving a nomination for the 2003 DanceStar Award for Best Breakthrough DJ, Palash mixed another CD, Addictive Beats, which found a home on Grammy Award winner Peter Rauhofer's Star 69 Records. All studio mixes and productions aside, it is live and in the club where Palash shines. Whether it's a 10-hour marathon set to the never-tiring sweaty crowds of Romania or an intimate New Year's Eve set at Arc in New York City, Palash has joined the ranks of the DJ elite through his consummate ability to evoke instinctual, euphoric responses from crowds around the world. http://www.djpalash.com * >>> Aes_Dana_-_Memory_Shell-Retail_CD-2004-BOSS Release date: 2004-10-10 Label Info and Catalog #: Ultimae INRE014 Artist/Album info: New album by Aes Dana out on Ultimae Records... Aes Dana (Vincent Villuis) is back with his third album on French Ultimae Records. He has got a good reputation after releasing his album Season 5 in 2002 and the limited edition CD called Aftermath last year. He is known for going deep into spacey ambient and down tempo trance. With this release you also get a fat booklet with text and several pictures. Aes Dana delivers another strong album full of deep, relaxing ambient and down tempo grooves. Very different from the tribal chill we get in most psychill releases, but also very refreshing to hear something as deep and spacey as this. Very dreamy music all the way through. First out is a short track with slow, mystic sounds gliding in a relaxed way. Nice and chilled intro on the album. Track 2 continues the deep, floating soundscapes. Aes Dana always delivers very spacey sounds, with mystic and relaxing vibes forcing us to calm down. In this track we also get some relaxed experimental beats and a beautiful humming voice. Reminds me a bit of the deep cold, so called arctic ambient, artists such as Biosphere etc. produce. These tracks float over in each other so it becomes a nice journey. Track 3 has a bit more dramatic vibe. Still totally deep and floating. You also get a voice in this one and the track slowly builds up. After a while a relaxing down tempo rhythm sneaks slowly into the track. A beautiful voyage into deep ambient music. Track 4 starts totally slow, before we glide into a pumping down tempo groove. With this kind of chill out, you can just sit and relax or take a slow dance. This should be perfect for an early evening trance set too. Track 5 continues the deep, dark vibes. It starts with someone telling a little story, we hear the sound of water, before we float further into more mystic vibes. Then comes the stumpy beat back on track. Very drifting with spacey, deep sounds all the way. Track 6 is one of my favourite tracks on this album. It has a beautiful voice and some very nice atmospheric floating sounds. Totally relaxing with slow, experimental, drifting beats. Track 7 has some very mystic vocals, and almost no beats at all. Just floating deep sounds. About as deep as ambient can get. Track 8 goes to a bit lighter level and we get more groovy down tempo beats. Track 9 is another floating, little masterpiece with a bit more earthy sound, still going a mystic direction. Relaxing drums and beautiful sounds. Track 10 takes us to an even deeper, relaxing level. Perfect when you are tired and want to listen to something really dreamy. Track 11 is originally made by Aural Planet, but here we get a remix by Aes Dana. The original track is on their album called Acoustic Plantation Releases, released on Flow Records earlier this year. Aes Dana gives us a deep, relaxed version of the track, with his typical spacey floating vibes. The last track Vincent gives us on this album is a short finishing track floating like the intro we get on this album. http://www.ultimae.com http://www.psyshop.com/shop/CDs/inr/inr1cd014.html * >>> X-Dream_-_We_Interface-2004-MYCEL Release date: 2004-10-13 Label Info and Catalog #: Solstice solmc-041 Artist/Album info: For over 10 years charismatic X-Dream who has given us fresh... ...surprises, one lgendary track after another, will now release their much anticipated new album, which has reached a state of 'Art' that embodies every aspect of their vision, filled with an avantgard spirit.
