β β
β Dear Reader : β
β β
β This is the eleventh issue of Reality Check Network. By this time, β
β we feel that we are well established and are willing to better yield to β
β the readers' demands. Improvements are constantly being made to RCN as β
β a result of reader input. If you would like to participate in the β
β further enhancement of RCN, or if you would like to subscribe to our β
β mailing list, please send E-Mail to [email protected]. β
β β
β This issue of RCN new features some "fun stuff" to do when you're β
β bored. Rebel Chicken and I got bored (again) of the same-old same-old β
β mag, and we fealt that just editorials (of which we have gotten a record β
β number this week) isn't enough interaction between our readers and us. β
β New in this issue, you will find a "Warez-IQ" questionnaire of some β
β trivia questions about the scene today. You will also find a voting β
β booth to vote with for your favorite groups. β
β β
β NEW, and IMPROVED (I guess), RCN now has an ASCII version for all of β
β you, that for some reason just can't handle our totally k-rad coded one. β
β It's called RCN-11.TXT and is located within the main ZIP. Enjoy it! β
β β
β RCN issues have now been made available to a wider audience thanks β
β to our new WebSite courtesy of RATM. Please feel free to browse around β
β - http://www.shu.edu/~importmi/rcn/. RCN ardently feels that our β
β WebSite will satisfy our readers and is a welcome addition. β
β β
β β
β Sincerely, β

β Throughout these past 10 issues, Reality Check Network has received a β
β great amount of user response. The RCN staff has decided to publish β
β these comments, whether supportive or destructive. We would like to β
β encourage our readers to continue to voice their opinions, and we would β
β like to thank all the readers that have done so up until now. β

β β
β Dear RCN, β
β β
β Keep up the good work! I love your great vision on the warez scene, β
β and I think that I share your views on almost everything. I think that β
β we should all help each other, and we should all be equals, but we're β
β human, and the day that we overcome silly "egos" will truly be one for β
β the record books. β

β β
β β
β Dear RCN, β
β β
β I love the song "Raster" by void of reality. I was wondering if you β
β could do me a favor and direct me to a place where I can get more of β
β their stuff. β
β β
β Dear Reader, β
β β
β Reality is a really awesome coding group. They are not at all into β
β warez, so don't go looking for them on IRC. I suggest you look for β
β some of their demos on a demos site, and maybe you'll find some of their β
β coding work. As far as composing, any music they make, you'll find in β
β RCN :-). β
β β
ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
β β
β β
β Dear RCN, β
β β
β Hi! First, congrats for your excellent e-mag! Definitely the best! β
β I have a suggestion, though. Please put an option that will β
β automatically change the music sequentially, cause you get bored reading β
β the huge mag with the same music, and it's hard to go back to change the β
β music. β
β β
β Dear Reader, β
β β
β Great idea! We, the editors, probably don't notice the problem as β
β much because most of the time we're reading the mag, we're in AcidDraw β
β writing or proofreading, not actually running the EXE. We'll try to β
β implement the idea as soon as possible! β
β β
β Note : NEW, and IMPROVED! We have now implemented this idea, so you'll β
β probably notice the music changing any minute now. β
β β
ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
β β
β β
β Dear RCN, β
β β
β I can not understand why many groups in the scene hate each other β
β based on the fact that they are competing against each other or because β
β of accidental dupes. The way I see it, we are all in this together and β
β despite how lame this sounds, we should stand united and with united β
β roots we won't be overcome. How do you people at RCN feel on this? β
β β
β Dear Reader, β
β β
β If you're waiting for all the groups to unite, you've got a long β
β wait ahead of you. I don't argue that there should be separate groups β
β because some people just don't get along with others. I do argue, β
β however, that we would be better off with just one big group, or β
β "united" as you put it. Competition is what makes the scene have β
β quality releases. At times, one's competitive spirit will overcome him β
β and cause him to fuck up on releases, but that's besides the point. If β
β the scene weren't based on competition, why would we have it? Surely β
β you don't think that we actually USE any of the software we release, β
β right?! β
β β
ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
β β
β β
β Dear RCN, β
β β
β I would like to say something to all sysops out there. If you β
β haven't read about the bust of the Assasin's Guild for having Novell and β
β Microsoft software online, go read it. I have been a sysop for 6 years β
β now and in my area code we have had a few BBSs busted just for Novell β
β files being online. No one chases their files down like Novell does, β
β consider this just as a warning and say it is bullshit if you want, BUT, β
β I have seen what the cops do to a house when they search it, and I have β
β seen friends lose all of their computer equipment just over Novell. β
β β
β Dear Reader, β
β β
β You are exactly right. Let us all take the bust of the Assasin's β
β Guild as a warning. It's not hard to dodge the cops, but not following β
β rules just because we think they're stupid isn't going to get us too far β
β in the scene. β
β β
ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
β β
β Dear RCN, β
β β
β This is a response to the articles about tKLP and RoR, and their β
β involvement with Legacy and NFS. First, on the topic of tKLP sabotaging β
β NFS, the only one who sabotaged NFS was the dumbass who released β
β Softram 96 because they were told by tKLP to hurry and beat his group. β
β Competing groups have never, to my knowledge, told another group to β
β hurry so that they could beat their own group. On the subject of tKLP β
β 'stealing' members, according to the article written by Akira 7, it β
β didn't appear to me that he was asking him to leave LGC for RoR. He β
β could very easily have been in both groups, believe me, I am. Now onto β
β the wars between LGC and tKLP and other RoR members. Why not just let β
β it die? I am pretty sure I speak for most people when I say ENOUGH IS β
β ENOUGH, we are getting tired of reading and hearing about it. The lame β
β channel takeover attempts, the LGC SUCKS DICK, ROR SUCKS DICK. It is β
β all childish, instead of wasting your time bashing the other people, β
β why not do something productive, spread some warez, make some money, get β
β laid, whatever, just quit the wars. β
β β
β β
β Dear Reader, β
β β
β I will agree with you that Akira 7 could have very well been in both β
β RoR and LGC, and maybe the article didn't do a very good job of β
β clarifying it, but tKLP has continuously harassed my members trying to β
β either get them to join RoR or do other little favors for him. We are β
β not in a war with RoR, a war involves interaction of two sides. It β
β happened to be that β
β β
ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
β β
β The following is in response to the courier group ranking of RCN issue β
β 10... β
β β
β When couriering first started in the scene, it wasn't about editing β
β file_id.diz's. It wasn't about offering in channels. It was about β
β competing with your competitors on the boards. Anyone can edit a DIZ, β
β anyone can type /plist, but not everyone can get warez fast enough to β
β upload them to the biggest boards. You rated RTS as #1. In this, I β
β totally disagree. RTS is a very respectable group, and I myself am β
β friends with good old Ordnance, but they are clearly not #1. RiSC is at β
β the top. They have a hidden channel on IRC so lamers don't try to get β
β in #RiSC, bug people, etc. Only the leetest people know what channel β
β RiSC is in, and yes, they do have sites, and they are not public or β
β anonymous sites, they're the way it should be. They are private sites, β
β therefore you have to be in RiSC or be very respected to be on them. β
β β
β Warez should go to people who make the scene run, not lamers who β
β beg. Knowing Park Central is their WHQ, and the best board in the world β
β statistically and popularity-wise, each week the top 10 uploaders are β
β from RiSC. This is what couriering is about, it's about racing and β
β competition and having fun while doing it. They have the best couriers β
β in the business. β
β β
β In second place, I believe, is MALiCE. They do some offering on the β
β net, but they are strong BBS couriers like RiSC as well. Call the top β
β boards, MALiCE people will be on the top 10 as well. In third place β
β should be RTS, they are strong in both areas, but not superb in BBS β
β couriering like RiSC and MALiCE. These are just the corrections I would β
β like to submit that I feel need to be changed. β
β Signed, β
β tKLP β
β β
β Dear Reader, β
β β
β First off, I would like to submit corrections to your editorial. β
β What you sent in is not a correction to Trite's writeup, it's not a fix, β
β it's your opinion, an opinion that I, along with many others, value. I β
β happen to value Trite's opinion as well. I'm glad that you backed up β
β your opinions with facts, they are all quite true, you have a nice β
β perspective on the couriering scene. Keep reading this issue of RCN, β
β Trite has modified his writeup (no, he didn't change any of the final β
β scores!) so that he is better backing up his previous opinions. Enjoy, β
β and write in again if you still disagree with his results! β
β β
ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
β β
β Dear RCN, β
β β
β Last week in RCN, I read a letter from a reader saying Windows 95 β
β is shit. Five months ago I would have agreed. First off, my system is β
β a Pentium-90 with 16 megs of RAM. When I first tried WIndows 95 I was β
β running OS/2 with spuratic trap 0002 crashes. My BBS ran GREAT under β
β it, and it was a powerful operating system. Then I wanted to get more β
β into the net, and using OS/2 on the net is a waste. OS/2 was great but β
β has shit for support. Soooo, after being an OS/2 diehard and saying β
β Windows 95 is a piece of shit for so long I finally had to make the β
β jump. β
β β
β Okay, format the drives, install Windows 95 (30 minutes of hell). β
β OK, it starts right up! Seems okay at first, I am a little lost, how do β
β I add DOS programs? How do I edit pifs? ARGH!! I fuck with it for β
β about 3 hours, won't run my CAD program without a reboot, BBS runs like β
β shit if I multitask, FUCK THIS! Reformat, reinstall OS/2... That was β
β my first impression of the wonderful world of "Wild" Bill Gates. About β
β a month later the hatred diminished a tad. Okay, give it another shot. β
β Format the drives, reinstall, first night, sucked, second night, hmm, β
β found some cool shit. After running for four months.. I love it! Now β
β I have no problem running ANYTHING I want, Hexen and Doom II run great, β
β my CAD runs great! When I am on the net now, I just keep opening β
β windows without a worry. I usually have MiRC, 2 CuteFTPs, Eudora, β
β MS-DOS prompt, Iparty (which is voice talking to multiple friends at β
β once, and it works, not like IPhone) and moving around in all these β
β windows is not a problem. It may not have the absolute power of Linux, β
β but I also have a shitload of new apps to try out each week, and tons of β
β help if I have problems. Plus, it looks pretty! So, for anyone who β
β says Windows 95 sucks, either you haven't given it a real try, or you β
β are running a 386/40 with 4 megs and don't have a clue. β
β β
β Signed, β
β RoadRebel β
β β
β Dear Reader, β
β β
β It's funny, I had the exact same story coming from OS/2. OS/2 was β
β a real dream come true coming from Windows 3.1, even on my 486/66 with β
β a mere 8 megs of RAM! Heck, at least I could download in the β
β background! Windows 95 really is the better choice now, though. More β
β software is available for it, and it doesn't swap nearly as much. β

β β
β Q : In last week's issue of RCN, you submitted an article accusing β
β tKLP of asking you to join RoR. When he asked you to join, did he β
β at any point, ask you to leave Legacy for RoR? If so, what were β
β tactics did he use? β
β β
β A : Yes, tKLP asked me to leave Legacy. He "swore" that Legacy was β
β going to die that night, and that I shouldn't waste my time with a β
β dying group. He then proceded to ask me to leave Legacy in order β
β to join RoR. β
β β
β Q : On what basis could he "swear" that Legacy would die that very β
β night? β
β β
β A : tKLP said that his friends from Hybrid and D0D would come and help β
β him permanently break up Legacy. β
β β
β Q : How was tKLP and his friends planning to permanently break down β
β Legacy? What was tKLP's plan? β
β β
β A : tKLP said that he would, along with his friends, take down #Legacy β
β permanently. He also said that they would follow Legacy to β
β whatever new channel we came up with. tKLP also said he was going β
β to convince key members to switch groups. This was all part of β
β tKLP's plan to "kill Legacy." β
β β
β Q : Why did you not believe tKLP? What stopped you from leaving a β
β "dying group"? β
β β
β A : I thought it was possible that the three groups would try to take β
β down Legacy, but I knew it was not going to be successful. I have β
β been a member of FSW, Vendetta, and then Legacy, and Legacy is β
β here to stay. If Legacy did die, and I were to join another group β
β it would not be RoR. β
β β
β Q : What would turn you off from joining RoR? β
β β
β A : The main turn off from RoR is their leadership. I have absolutely β
β NO respect for tKLP as a leader. β
β β
β Q : Why do you not trust the leadership of RoR when it is someone as β
β well respected as tKLP? β
β β
β A : I would not call tKLP "well respected." He is one of the worst β
β leaders I have ever met. He has been kicked out of his own group, β
β and is constantly trying to steal suppliers from other groups. He β
β does not care about his group or his members, and he has no style. β
β β
β Q : When tKLP asked you to leave Legacy to join RoR, and you simply β
β said "No", what was his response? β
β β
β A : tKLP said, "Hey man, if you want to ride into the ground with β
β Legacy, don't blame me." He then asked me to consider joining RoR β
β after Legacy died. tKLP has asked me to leave Legacy for RoR many β
β times even though I keep saying "No." He is definitely persistent. β

β β
β Q : Why did you leave a good courier group such as MindCrash? β
β β
β A : I was sitting on IRC one night thinking about how I wasn't really β
β giving 100% to my other duties, mainly TSC (The Sixthed Circle). β
β I have decided to devote more time to my utilities group by β
β leaving MindCrash for now. It takes too much work to do a good β
β job and it wouldn't be fair for MindCrash if I only half-tried. β
β β
β Q : If TSC doesn't work out, will you go back to MindCrash? β
β β
β A : No, I have made my bed already and I will lay in it. I can't go β
β back 3 months from now and ask to be a senior again, that would be β
β a bad thing. I made it clear that I have nothing against anyone β
β in MindCrash. The Wicked One and Blitzkrieg stood by me until β
β the end. I am sure that MC will continue to be one of the best β
β courier groups in the world, doing what they do best, couriering. β
β I will miss MC a lot because they are a tight band of couriers. I β
β have much respect for The Wicked One and Blitzkrieg. I have been β
β in MindCrash since the very start and I will sincerely miss MC. β
β β
β Q : What will keep TSC from dying like a lot of other new utility β
β release groups? β
β β
β A : With my current resources, and with proper management, TSC should β
β do just fine. I'm not going to lie, it is hard to start a release β
β group nowadays because there are so many of them out there. TSC β
β isn't formed on the premise of ruling the scene. We only want to β
β do our part to help. We have a positive attitude when working β
β with bigger groups, which is always a big plus. β
β β
β Q : What are the policies of TSC? Will TSC members be allowed to join β
β other utility release groups? β
β β
β A : That varies a lot since it varies with each person and how much β
β they contribute to TSC. I don't really have a problem with it if β
β the person is dedicated 100% to TSC and can do other shit as well β
β for other groups. β
β β
β Q : Many TSC members are also in MC, it must be very beneficial for β
β TSC to be affiliated with such a strong courier group. Is TSC and β
β MC officially sister groups? β
β β
β A : Yes, TSC and MC are sister groups. β
β β
β Q : TSC has had a few releases so far, how has it been working out? β
β β
β A : Releasing is going great, our suppliers have done well so far, and β
β MC has done a great job spreading our files. β
β β
β Q : Will TSC join the game competition in the near future? β
β β
β A : We will being doing utilities for now since they are my favorite. β
β Great games come and go, but a great utilities stick around my HD β
β longer. β
β β
β Q : Do you feel that TSC will grow in numbers as well as in release β
β power? β
β β
β A : I would rather keep the numbers within the group small. I know β
β everyone in the group right now, so we have less conflicts. If we β
β do expand our operations, then that would be fine as well since it β
β is all part of doing business. We will survive as long as we keep β
β up our standards. β

β β
β Q : Legacy is a fast-growing games group and is now considered one of β
β the top 3. Why do you feel that Legacy has risen to such β
β greatness in such a short period of time? β
β β
β A : Legacy is like the "Third Reich" for Rebel Chicken and myself. We β
β started out with FSW, and boy was that a disaster, a disaster to β
β the rest of the scene, though. In reality, it was the place where β
β Rebel Chicken and I learned what to do in a group, or, more β
β specifically what NOT to do. It was amazing, we were twisted from β
β the start. Even the name was retarded. After FSW, we started β
β Vendetta. Vendetta was much more organized, did a much better job β
β of releasing quality, not just anything we found in a gutter, it β
β didn't just use the word of others when it came to dupe checking, β
β and our members were much more dedicated. The group came down β
β rather abruptly, though, when school started, and we thoguth we'd β
β be overwhelmed with work (we were wrong). We missed the scene too β
β much, and just as soon as we left, we were back in it, this time β
β with a plan, yes, another one. So far, that plan has worked. β
β β
β Q : Since Legacy is an improvement upon two younger and less β
β experienced, do you feel that many of the smaller groups today β
β will somehow die and come back in the future as a more significant β
β team? β
β β
β A : That's part of the reason why I always treat young groups with β
β respect. I said this in the last issue of RCN, and I guess I'll β
β say it again. It takes ambition to start a new group, and all β
β group leaders should be credited for being courageous enough to β
β join the competition. If a group breaks down because the faculty β
β isn't dedicated enough, that's one thing. If a group breaks down β
β because its methods are not right, that's another thing. The β
β latter is a perfectly good example of someone striving for a β
β second chance, and that's the beauty of the scene. You can always β
β have another chance. I wouldn't expect every small group that β
β comes up and then dies to become the next great, but I'm sure that β
β a small percentage of the groups will, and we should recognize the β
β groups for that small percent. β
β β
β Q : Legacy has released a lot of software that would be considered β
β "Budget." Are these programs as inexpensive as people claim, and β
β if so, will that stop you from releasing them? β
β β
β A : Legacy started because the two groups that preceded it had too β
β many broken releases, either not properly cracked or just not well β
β packaged. We have dedicated ourselves to releasing quality games β
β that people will want. Our main serious fuckup to date was that β
β game called "Bass Fishing Classics." It was a store release, but β
β that in no way justified its release. If any game that Legacy has β
β released was budget, that was it! Apart from that, we are looking β
β for quality. I was recently criticized on IRC about a release we β
β did a few days back, "Pinball 4000." The person was trying to β
β tell me that the game sold for a mere $14.99, a "budget" program β
β that should not have been released. That seemed preposterous to β
β me. I don't download many games, but I did download this game due β
β to its size (1 disk!) and was quite pleased with the result. A β
β seven minute download and I got a very nice game! Money doesn't β
β tie into the scene, we download programs free of charge, and we β
β have no right to bash on a program when it wasn't a $69.95 game. β
β Legacy is used to releasing those types of games, but you must β
β note of the time, it's January, and not that many companies are β
β publishing new software. Instead of expecting $70 games, Legacy β
β looks for games that may have been missed, or games that never β
β made it out because the crack was too hard. While sifting through β
β the programs, we often find these smaller games that could be very β
β nice releases. Pinball 4000 was one of them (Bass Fishing β
β Classics was not :-). β
β β
β Q : Legacy has released many games that have worked perfectly. β
β However, releases such as "Prisoner of Ice" have managed to seep β
β through. What do you do when you release a program that is not β
β fully functioning? β
β β
β A : Prisoner of Ice was our first release, and we were not as β
β experienced in releasing games only as we now are. What do we do β
β when such a program is released? Hehehe, well, I usually just β
β blame it on Rebel Chicken! Heheh, after that, though, I, along β
β with the rest of the Legacy staff, will do my best to help the β
β user get the game to work, even if the problem directly involves β
β his computer. We are here to get our programs to work on our β
β end users' computers. If that involves helping them install a β
β program that has nothing to do with ours, so be it. β
β β
β Q : Legacy is well known for having one of the most user-friendly β
β installers for all their games. Many people have grown used to β
β merely typing LGC-INST. Do you feel that it is becoming a β
β necessity in the scene to have an installer? β
β β
β A : I think it's more important for a games group to have an installer β
β than for a utils group to have one. It is virtually unheard of to β
β release a disk game, and CD games are no longer as easy to install β
β as the old disk games were. We now use multi-volume ARJ files and β
β subdirectories and aah! By the time you have typed all the β
β required parameters for ARJ, you've forgotten what the release β
β was! With utils, this isn't so much a problem because most utils β
β do come on disks. Also, a games group is there to provide β
β entertainment, and it is in synch with the mood of our releases to β
β have a fun looking EXE to present to our users. β
β β
β Q : Why did Legacy pick MindCrash as their official couriers? β
β β
β A : Being a games group, Legacy gets its releases couriered no matter β
β what. Our problem isn't in finding people to get our releases β
β out, it's in finding a couriering force that will be dedicated to β
β us when one of our members needs a release or what not. It just β
β happens to be that MindCrash is an awesome couriering force, both β
β dedication-wise and speed-wise. β
β β
β Q : Why doesn't Legacy release utils? β
β β
β A : We believe that we can stay much more on task if we concentrate β
β on one type of program. We have enough experience and have tried β
β the other ways we thought might work, and this one seems to be the β
β best so far. Ripping and cracking games isn't easy, and having to β
β concentrate both on that and on utils would be a bit overwhelming. β
β When we do get utils, however, we give them to our sister group, β
β Mayhem, as they give us their games when they have them. β

β Q : MOTiV8 has long been famous for its awesome sites. How important β
β are private sites for MOTiV8? β
β β
β A : Private sites are very important for the group. Without private β
β sites we wouldn't have steady places to leech from. β
β β
β Q : How important are public anonymous sites for MOTiV8? β
β β
β A : We are not currently supporting anonymous sites, but once we are β
β organized and get all our private sites back up, I want to start β
β doing anonymous sites again because it helps spread files to the β
β "lesser people". β
β β
β Q : What are your duties in MOTiV8? β
β β
β A : I am the MOTiV8 site coordinator. I help members get on the sites β
β with ease. I make sure that the sites are being supported. If β
β the site is not supported, I make sure that it is before the site β
β leaves for another group. β
β β
β Q : How well is MOTiV8 doing on boards? β
β β
β A : We aren't concentrating on BBS couriering too much right now, but β
β we might in the future. However, we do have a few BBS couriers. β
β β
β Q : I have great respect for MOTiV8 and tend to give it the benefit of β
β the doubt, but how much does MOTiV8 concentrate on Net IRC β
β spreading. It is a rare moment when I see a MOTiV8 courier either β
β Legacy releases or any other releases. β
β β
β A : Unfortunately, not too much at the moment but since our private β
β sites are back up, we can grab releases a lot easier and you might β
β see us spreading a lot on IRC. β
β β
β Q : Althought I doubt it is true, because I know that MOTiV8 has many β

β Q : What is Rush? Does Rush specialize in games or utilities, if it β
β does not yet specialize in an area, will it do so in the near β
β future? β
β β
β A : Rush currently specializes in both games and utilities, but I β
β think we will let other groups take care of games. β
β β
β Q : Why will Rush specialize in utilities? What are the advantages of β
β specializing in utilities and not in games? β
β β
β A : We have many good games connections, but many Rush members feel β
β that the "scene" is getting closer. We feel that the utilities β
β scene comes closer to "the heart" more than the game scene does. β
β β
β Q : In what way is the utilities scene "closer to the heart"? Is Rush β
β specializing in utilities because it is easier to find a utility β
β to release than it is to find a game to release? β
β β
β A : Rush started as doing utilities only, but then we thought about β
β releasing games. For most of us, we feel that it is more fun to β
β release utilities than it is to release games. β
β β
β Q : More fun? One can play a game, but one cannot play a utilitiy. β
β Why would releasing something that cannot be played be more fun β
β than releasing something that one can play? β
β β
β A : Releasing utilities is more fun than releasing games. I am not β
β talking for everyone in Rush because I never play games. Rush can β
β help more people by releasing utilities. β
β β
β Q : What sets Rush apart from other release groups? β
β β
β A : Our crew works very hard and we have great relationships with our β
β suppliers. We are only trying to support "the scene" with some β
β good titles. β
β β
β Q : What are some of the good titles recently from Rush? β
β β
β A : I heard rumors that SoftIce for Win95 was a dupe, others say that β
β it wasn't, but I really liked that release. β
β β
β Q : Yes, it was a dupe of a release from Hemp from mid 1995. What β
β will Rush do in order to prevent future dupes? β
β β
β A : We dupe check our releases on boards like Beyond Akira and then we β
β check with couriering groups on IRC. We check a release around β
β 5-6 times before releasing it. From this year on, we will never β
β dupe because there is no reason to. β

β Q : Why was Sindicate started? According to my sources, SNC is a β
β branch of another new group, NFS (Need for Speed). Is that true, β
β if so, why did SNC branch off? β
β β
β A : SNC is not a branch off of NFS. SNC was started for the fun of β
β releasing warez and getting them out to the people. We do have β
β many NFS members in our group but we are not a branch off. NFS β
β has been talking to another founder about a possible merge. β
β β
β Q : Is it not true that many SNC seniors were once NFS seniors? Does β
β that not prove that they left NFS to join SNC? β
β β
β A : NFS did not like us when we first started off because many NFS β
β members decided to join SNC. Fallout kicked out everyone from NFS β
β that was also in SNC. We have two SNC seniors that were kicked β
β out of NFS because Fallout believed that they were not loyal. β
β β

β β
β A : Yes, I am not sure on the exact number, but it was around 3. β
β β
β Q : What will make SNC bigger and better than NFS and other release β
β groups? β
β β
β A : We are a very organized group and I beleive the senior council β
β knows how to run a group successfully. Our objective is to get β
β warez out as fast as we can. β
β β
β Q : Will SNC specialize in a specific area of releasing in the near β

β β
β A : We are currently a group that only releases utilities. β
β β
β Q : What is your opinion of Fallout and NFS? β
β β
β A : I personally like NFS and I think it can be a very successful if β
β the council does not fuck up. Fallout and I are friends and I β
β like him. β
β β
β Q : You were the President of NBC before it died, will SNC be another β
β repeat of NBC? Will it die in a week? β
β β
β A : Yes, I was the President of NBC. I do not think that we will die. β
β NBC was very unorganized and we made some bad mistakes at the very β
β start, and that will not happen again. β
β β
β Q : What were some of those bad choices, and how will you prevent them β
β from happening again? β
β β
β A : We basically let in everyone that applied and we never checked β
β references. I will make sure to check references from now on. β
β β
β Q : How will you check references? β
β β
β A : We would make new applicants give 3 or 4 references and we would β

β β
β The following is an open letter (Submitted to RCN for publication) to β
β all in the scene: β
β β
β Though many of you probably don't know me, I am writing this letter β
β to all so that you may know the error of my ways, and so that you won't β
β repeat any of my mistakes. β
β β
β For six months, I was a part of fATE. I was the SiteOp of their Net β
β WHQ. My FTP site logged more than 1.8 terabytes of transfers during β
β my tenure as a fATE operative, and more than 30 gigs of warez were β
β pumped into the scene because of it. By most accounts, including those β
β of g0d and Anti Derivative, my bosses, my site was the second most 'leet β
β site on the Net. I take solace in the fact that I was able to provide β
β this service for so many. That makes what I have to say harder. β
β β
β I am taking leave of the scene permanently, so that I may pursue the β
β education that my Internet connection was originally intended to β
β support. I don't take this decision lightly, but I believe it's one β
β that has to be made. But before I go, I would like to say a few β
β thoughts about the many things on my mind. β
β β
β fATE, as a group, has more dedicated people in it than most groups β
β do. The new people that fATE constantly recruits only make the group β
β stronger, and more adept at couriering warez. LeoDLioN has done β
β nothing but work his tail off since he became a senior, and his work β
β is reflected in the number of quality warez couriered by fATE. Touch β
β Tone is a kickbutt releaser, and Doobie does a good job managing β
β sites. In general, most of the members of fATE work very hard to get β
β things done for the group on and off the IRC. My WHQ FTP site, Sickle's β
β Cell FTP, and Sewerat's 13th Floor sites were always full with at least β
β 200 megs of 0 day warez. β
β β
β Not everything was rosy, though. During the first week of December, β
β several fATE members had a conference call. Discussed in this β
β conference call were the future of the group, the image of the group, β
β and the means by which to inflict a positive change in the group's image β
β and standing among all other groups. The outcome of that discussion β
β called for Anti Derivative and g0d to listen to their members and β
β carefully make judgments on how the group should be run. β
β β
β Those included in the conference call were myself, Sickle, Gahn, β
β LeoDLioN, tKLP and IceKitten. We came to a consensus that having two β
β figureheads at the top of a group was senseless and did not represent β
β the best interests of fATE. We also figured that it would be easy for β
β us to tell Anti Derivative and g0d what we thought, what we wanted β
β changed, and how we thought it should be done, but they weren't β
β responsive to our thoughts at all and did not wish to hear anything β
β about them. β
β β
β They accused all of us, especially myself, of conspiring against β
β them to overthrow the heads of fATE. They couldn't have been more β
β wrong. Unfortunately, differences between myself and Anti-Derivative β
β and g0d forced me to take permanent leave of fATE. Several other β
β members left too, including Sickle, IceKitten, Gahn, LeoDLion, and tKLP. β
β LeoDLioN has since returned to fATE to resume his role as an β
β outstanding, fair, moral leader of a group that still lacks the β
β ability to converse with their "true" leaders and resolve real β
β problems. β
β β
β The reasons I left had nothing to do with being thrown out for β
β "conspiring" and had everything to do with ongoing differences between β
β myself and the two at the top. Even so, this subject, for me, is the β
β most painful to discuss. Anti Derivative and g0d gave me my start, from β
β a nobody with a fast connection to the sysadmin of a world class β
β Internet FTP service dedicated to the transfer of fATE-tagged warez. β
β β
β However, the immaturity of Anti Derivative and g0d got to the better β
β of fATE. Actions speak louder than words, and their actions have caused β
β much trouble for fATE, so much resentment by other groups, and such hate β
β by individuals. β
β β
β In order to write this I asked to be invited into fATE, and g0d was β
β happy to oblige. When I told them I was writing this, and told them β
β I believed RTS is number two on the scene, I was promptly kicked. The β
β following is an excerpt from the logs taken that night... β
β β
β <Sucre> doobs: rts β
β <D00bie> hahaah β
β <D00bie> thats funny.. β
β <g0d> rts??..hahahhahahhahahahhahha β
β <g0d> hahahahhaha β
β <g0d> hahahhahahahhahahahha β
β <g0d> hahahhahaha β
β <g0d> hahahah β
β <D00bie> sorry but not interested.. this is a joke.. β
β <g0d> ahhhh shit hahahhahahah β
β <Sucre> yes and i believe its their attitude β
β *** You were kicked by g0d (g0d) β
β *** Attempting to rejoin... β
β β
β Needless to say...I wasn't able to rejoin. However, I was able to β
β obtain the logs of what was said after I was kicked from the channel β
β #fATE. β
β β
β <Sucre> yes and i believe its their attitude β
β *** Sucre was kicked by g0d (g0d) β
β <Arch|Vile> guys.. that will also go in his review β
β <D00bie> he's got to be kidding ?? no? β
β <Arch|Vile> our reaction is what shouldnt have happened β
β <g0d> jesus that really made my day haha... β
β <Arch|Vile> we just acted liek a bunch of little kids, kicking β
β someone, because he made his opinion.. β
β <Arch|Vile> its also the behaviour of members that gives the groups a β
β reputation β
β <g0d> listen...It is no-one's business what we are doing....those β
β lame warez mags are all crap...and 100% biased...You want a good β
β review...get fATE too start writting one...I am all for it..then we β
β will go interview everyone else and slam them heh β
β <Arch|Vile> and the way we acted was pathetic that's all that i am β
β saying β
β <Sewerat> hehe....I second that :) β
β <D00bie> also, see how fast we went down in the ratings as soon as we β
β kicked ghosty??? β
β <g0d> No arch what you are saying is the way I acted was pathetic... β
β <Arch|Vile> what we do to members, and all that is completely our β
β business β
β <Arch|Vile> and no one should write reviews about that BUT he came in β
β quite peacfully β
β <Arch|Vile> g0d: we laughed at him and then kicked him that was not a β
β right thing to do he was peaceful β
β <g0d> arch that was sucre...he is a lame ass β
β <Arch|Vile> we should have PROVED that we are better than rts β
β <[-MANiC-]> just because he doesnt feel that the group is talking to β
β is #1 doesnt mean anything bad.. he was really nice about β
β it, he could have said fATE is #3 cuz they suck β
β <g0d> he is never peaceful...he will slam us in his lame little β
β fucking review regardless of what happens in here β
β <Arch|Vile> you cant just go say he WILL put bad things in his review β
β <Arch|Vile> we should not have kicked him out β
β <Arch|Vile> even though SUCRE himself is a lamer β
β <Arch|Vile> HE is the one who wil write ABOUT fATE to the rest of the β
β world β
β <g0d> arch I was going to kick him a millisecond after he joined..he β
β was lucky he lasted that long.... β
β <[-MANiC-]> i must say i agree with arch... β
β <aNTi-D> who is this? β
β <[-MANiC-]> but β
β <Arch|Vile> we care g0d.. fATE should care β
β <[-MANiC-]> im gonna use my better judgement β
β <[-MANiC-]> and not get into an argument about it with seniors β
β <aNTi-D> who are we talking about? β
β <[-MANiC-]> sucre β
β <Arch|Vile> anti: do a scrollback tell me who you think is right β
β <[-MANiC-]> and wanted us to tell him stuff about how fATE was doing β
β <aNTi-D> i whole heartdly agree with g0d β
β <g0d> anti sucre joined the channel and said he is writting an β
β artical about fATE...I bounced his ass out β
β <aNTi-D> even if it wasn't for the fact sucre is a lame little no good β
β piece o shit bitch ass that if i knew where he lived i would imp β
β <[-MANiC-]> anti: because of sucre himself? or because of not wanting β
β a bad review? or a review in general? β
β <aNTi-D> good call g0d β
β β
β The dialog speaks for itself. Having put my personal feelings about β
β Anti Derivative and g0d aside, I believe that their presence in that β
β group and that channel are extremely detrimental to the group. β
β β
β To put it very succinctly, g0d lies, cheats and steals his way to β
β the top. He puts himself in front of his group. His agenda is to mow β
β over anything that he believes stands in his way. He's also threatened β
β my life and he thinks he knows everything about me there is to know. But β
β that's biased. β
β β
β In an unbiased review of g0d, he doesn't think before he acts, which β
β is manifest in his contempt for most members of most other groups. He β
β has repeatedly insulted the members of Malice. He considers most groups β
β not worthy of being in the scene. All that reflects on the group as a β
β whole, not on just g0d himself. β
β β
β His "leadership" is even questioned by the very people he is β
β supposedly leading, namely all those that told him that his kicking me β
β was pathetic, and not called for. Manic even went so far as to say that β
β it was against his better judgment to say anything against g0d. Does β
β that mean that the members of fATE fear g0d because if they speak up β
β like I did, they will be victims of more of g0d's rash decisions? β
β β
β To give credit where credit is due, g0d is a good courier, when he β
β does it. He can move warez with the best of them. His persistence on β
β some issues and work as a leader has taken fATE to new levels. β
β Unfortunately, ultimately those levels attained were forfeited when g0d β
β began acting ruthlessly and selflessly. β
β β
β Anti Derivative, the company president, is a little more mellow than β
β g0d. While g0d jumps to conclusions, AD tends to be more rational, more β
β subdued when making decisions. β
β β
β A lot has to be said about Anti Derivative. He is among the most β
β leet people in the scene. His drive to make fATE the number one group β
β out there is never ending. β
β β
β Anti Derivative doesn't play as much into the picture as g0d does, β
β for I believe that g0d controls fATE through the auspices of AD. For β
β that reason, I have little to say about aNTi-D, other than the fact β
β that he too has threatened my life, most notably during the night on β
β which the preceding log of #fATE was taken. β
β β
β Finally, I urge all members of fATE to question their leadership, β
β the benefits (of which there are few) and its detriments (of which there β
β are slightly more than a few), and decide if you really want this type β
β of leadership. β
β β
β You guys were all good guys (and some ladies). I am going to be β
β sorry that I'm leaving, but like I said, this is a decision that has β
β to be made. You will all be missed. β
β β
ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
β β
β I may not know too much about fATE, but I know enough to say that β
β Sucre was definitely one of your best members, and I say MEMBER, because β
β before we even look at the wonders he did for you, we must recognize the β
β dedication he feeded you with. It happens to be that he ran one of the β
β fastest sites for fATE, which should add to your dismay when you look β
β back at what you have done. I have a hard time believing that the fATE β
β leadership could treat a person dedicated to them for six months like β
β a bag of dirt. Six months may not be a lot in human years, not even a β
β lot in dog years, but it's a helluva lot of time in scene years (except β
β to those that have been around for 10 years). I think fATE's behavior β
β (and yes, I say fATE, because I mean fATE as a whole. If you're in β
β fATE, it means that the leadership represents you, and if you find that β
β that's not the case, you shouldn't be in fATE in the first place) with β
β Sucre during the time in which the above log was taken is sickening and β
β Sucre deserves a definite appology for it. I will say no more about β
β this, I think that the outcome of not having Sucre on your team, fATE, β
β will show you what you've done. β

β Child Porn Case Bogs Down Police β
β β
β Police investigating child pornography on the Internet say they've β
β received a number of calls from people asking if they are also under β
β suspision in the case. β
β β
β RCMP Const. Tom James said other local bulletin boards have closed down β
β since Tuesday, when two computers and a variety of software were seized β
β from a Westfort residence. β
β β
β Police allege an 18 year-old was offering child pornography from a β
β computer bulletin board but it could takes days before any charges are β
β laid. β
β β
β "It takes a long time to go through a two-gigabyte harddrive," said β
β James, who is conducting a dual investigation with Thunder Bay Police. β
β A hard drive that size can hold over 110,000 single-space typed pages β
β or 13,000 graphic images. β
β β
β James said the police have to look at all the files on the computers, β
β decide what they want and then secure and backup those files. If there β
β are pornographic images there is also the possibility of following up β
β some of the files, mostly pictures, to try and find their source and β
β perhaps lead to others who may be distributing pornography. β

β The 18 year old bustee, was ANARCHIST from Demolition and Legacy. β
β While he was in Legacy, he often complained that he did not have enough β
β hard drive space. Now I know why he had such shortage of space. It β
β might surprise some that Anarchist was in the front page for 2 days. β
β What boggles the mind is that while being printed in the newspaper, it β
β never mentioned his board containing pirated software. β
β β
β According to Lucifer Fear, Anarchist is currently on bail, but will β
β most likely be sentenced for 10 years in prison. Lucifer Fear has also β
β informed me that Anarchist might also be charged for rape of a 13 year β
β old girl, while he was babysitting her. β

β β
β Hello! In my last review on couriering groups (RCN, Issue 10, β
β Articles) I rated 5 of the top couriering groups in the scene today. It β
β seems that several people thought that my opinions were slightly biased β
β and incorrect. I feel that I did not provide enough infomation for you, β
β the readers, to fully understand my rating system, and what factors β
β contribute to a group's score. In this article, I will fully explain β
β how I rated groups in the last review, and clarify my opinions made, β
β hopefully so that you can understand my system. Before I jump to that, β
β β
β Overall Scores: β
β --------------- β
β 1. Request to Send [9.5] β
β 1. Rise in Superior Couriering [9.5] β
β 3. Mindcrash [7.8] β
β 4. Fast Action Trading Exchange [7.5] β
β 5. Malice [7.0] β
β β
β β
β I rate couriers based on two factors. They are as follows: β
β β
β 1. Couriering Ability. This obviously is based on a group's β
β participation in couriering, and how it organizes itself while β
β spreading. How it communicates between its Internet division β
β and its Telcom division. β
β β
β 2. Scene Awareness. This is how a group conducts itself when β
β dealing with new members, site inquiries, and over all "Heart" β
β of the group. This is based on how a group handles visitors to β
β their channel and mailed inquiries. It also takes into account β
β how a group interfaces with other groups, and the general warez β
β public. β
β β
β Now that you know what a group needs to do to score higher, let's β
β review last week's article. I have gotten a lot of response from MALiCE β
β members on their rating, so let's begin with them. β

β MALiCE is probably the leader in the couriering scene today, with β
β some of the fastest Internet and Telcom sites of any group. They define β
β excellence in couriering wiht skilled traders from around the world. I β
β have seen several of their distribution boards, and MALiCE pumps them to β
β their limit. β
β β
β Although MALiCE is one of the best couriering teams I have ever β
β seen, and they certainly grabbed a 10 on couriering ability, they just β
β lack talent in other areas, such as relations, group interfacing, etc. β
β My original example of their big-headedness might just be a tad out of β
β date, so I present to you their channel policy. Only MALiCE members are β
β allowed in the channel, no publicity for this group at all. This is by β
β far MALiCE's biggest fault. They do all recruiting by word-of-mouth, β
β which is not too bad, but not too good practice for a long lasting β
β courier group. This is why my rating of MALiCE was so low last week. β
β I hate those two criteria which each hold 50% of a group's overall β
β rating, so with a 10 in couriering ability and a mere 4 in scene β
β awareness, it averaged out to a 7. β
β β
β I have the utmost respect for MALiCE and their accomplishments. β
β They rank right up there with RiSC, but they need definite work in other β
β areas. β

β The second group, and last in this article, will be RTS. A few β
β people asked me why I rated RTS so high, beating MALiCE and tying with β
β RiSC. My rating for RTS is almost a reversal of that of MALiCE. RTS β
β has had a great year so far, with their couriers and net sites, but they β
β lack the power they had before with strong sites, and superb couriers. β
β Don't get me wrong, their couriers are great, I just don't see the β
β determination of the old RTS, so I rated RTS a 9 in couriering ability. β
β β
β Although RTS is lacking support for their couriers, every day I see β
β RTS traders busting their asses with "relations" work. What I mean by β
β "relations" is that they have every trader armed with apps and taggers β
β in their XDCC list, going around in group channels and various offer β
β channels offering RTS apps and searching for talent. I see RTS β
β interfacing with several groups and always getting their name out. RTS β
β is a fine role model for scene awareness, I could only wish that other β
β groups had so much spirit and enthusiasm as RTS. This is why I put them β
β so high on my scale, a 9 for couriering ability and a solid 10 for scene β
β awareness. RTS just needs to keep up the good work and get solid β
β couriering out there. β
β β
β These two groups were the only two that were questioned, so I will β
β let all of you figure out the rest for yourselves. By the way, if you β
β have any questions or comments regarding my reviews, mail RCN at their β
β anon address and they will promptly forward the mail to me. I will try β
β to reply to as many as possible, depending on how much mail I get. You β
β can also find me on IRC as [Trite]. β

β Subj : This guy is getting on my nerves.... β
β β
β A short while ago, I had the misfortune to read the latest issue of β
β Inquisition. I must say that not only was I laughing while reading the β
β glob of Razor-biased, lamer nonsense, but I was quite surprised to see a β
β net-lamer's rendition of how Park Central is an "unfair" board. β
β β
β First of all, I should point out that I have nothing against the net β
β as we know it, I never have and I never will, but when I see some little β
β net freak that spends his whole life on the net trying to tell people β
β that Park Central is unfair, it only makes me wonder, where does this β
β guy get off? β
β β
β I have nothing against people having opinions, but if you are going β
β to have an opinion on something, you should at least be informed in some β
β fashion of what you are criticizing. In this case, Razor's "Internet β
β Coordinator" was bashing PC because of our unfairness towards Razor on β
β races. This "unfairness" is obviously a complete lie, and I will try β
β to explain some of the reasons for this. β
β β
β 1.) In the last few races Razor was smoked on, they complained of having β
β their transfers aborted on PC. There is only one person that could β
β do that, and that's PC's local sysop, Silver V, which I should β
β mention has never been involved in group politics, and never will. β
β He runs this system as a hobby, and spends a lot of money every β
β month to keep this board going. The last thing he wants is the β
β heartache of dealing with crybaby groups like Razor. For the β
β record, the most recent race on Zone Raiders which Razor lost on. β
β Razor was quick to jump to the conclusion that someone was "creating β
β line noise" on their lines and aborting their transfers. Silver V β
β wasn't even home all day until late that night. I could probably β
β find close to 10 alibis who were with him at a local bar. So there β
β goes that sorry... sorry Razor. β
β β
β 2.) The new Razor has been using bullshit propaganda like this for β
β months in an attempt to gain people's sympathy for their pathetic β
β performance on races against the late TDU-JAM! and Hybrid on the β
β major boards. It seems that their strategy is a run-down the boards β
β that they are losing so miserably on, and to rag on the groups that β
β they are losing to. β
β β
β 3.) DruidKin who is so carefree in bashing PC, a board he does not even β
β have an account on, and probably doesn't even have an account on ANY β
β major boards. I don't recall this guy from any groups in the past. β
β I would like to know since when is he an expert on the scene. It β
β seems to me that he is just another clueless newbie who has been β
β transformed into a slave for Razor's cause. β
β β
β Obviously you can see that there is a great deal of credibility β
β lacking from Razor's claims against Park Central. I personally don't β
β appreciate being criticized by this clueless schmuck Druidkin who hasn't β
β been in the real scene as we know it. If somebody has something to say, β
β they better the hell have some substantiated proof about what they are β
β talking about. Again I must note that not a single one of these β
β "mysterious logoffs" that Razor is whining about has EVER been proven β
β and it was stay that way because the truth is that none of that shit has β
β EVER happened on Park Central for the years we have been up. These β
β accusations are merely part of an intricate web of lies that Razor is β
β weaving in order to brainwash all the net-lamers that they appeal so β
β much to, since they can't seem to get anyone in the REAL scene to β
β partake in their pathetic cause. β
β β
β All hail the REAL scene and all those who work so hard to keep it alive! β

β β
β β
β Neither Razor's accusations, nor Crackpot's points could ever be β
β proven since all the evidence is circumstantial. However, Crackpot β
β brings out many good points about how the BEST (Razor) is probably not β
β what they seem to be. Crackpot deserves most respect in the fact that β
β he is one of the people who keeps the scene ALIVE, regardless of his β
β opinions of Razor or other groups. β

β Inquisition has come out with another one of its great e-mags. Now, β
β I personally have nothing against iNQ. The e-mag seems to put out a β
β nice version usually. One of the prolbems though that I found was in
β their last issue. They seemed to have returned after a two week
β vacation. I think those two weeks were actually to let their egos grow β
β a little bit more. A comment that struck me as funny was "So RCN can β
β step aside and all you other lame e-mags too. None of you compare to β
β INQ." - CyberPhreak. What's going on here? In looking at their editor β
β list I finally figured out what the problem was. They have formed a β
β magazine of some of the most egoistical people in the scene today. Even β
β Lester seems to have gotten into things with his definition of RCN that β
β I'm sure took him no longer than 3 hours to think up. β
β β
β Malice, DOD, RTS... All groups that seem to be associated with iNQ. β
β I have nothing against any of the members within these groups. In fact, β
β I have known some of them to be very friendly. When I talked to the β
β President of Malice I was greeted by Operator with a "Fuck you; Why are β
β you bothering him?" Hey, what more could I ask for? The structure β
β today of the scene seems to be one oof very egoistical people who seem β
β to think that they are the best and that nobody can join their little β
β "Elite" world. If you ask me, all of these people must be neo-nazis of β
β the IRC world. β
β β
β When we find a new group trying to make it, instead of showing β
β support and maybe a friendly comment, we seem to be pulling them into an β
β ongoing war. Why? Is this the 1996 ego clash? Are we all really β
β better than those "Other lamers" trying to make it in this community? β
β "If you frequent any decent channels on IRC and actually talk with the β
β people that are sometimes written about and/or mentioned in RCN, you β
β will quickly wade through the line of shit that is written in this mag β
β and notice that what the authors are writing about is just simply for β
β the masses." - GoreFest. Boy am I glad you wrote this, Gore. Simply β
β for the masses? I didn't know that only the people that iNQ deems β
β "cool" are those that WE as in RCN should be writing for! GoreFest β
β started as a nobody, as we all did. Who knows how brown his nose got β
β before he rose to who he is today. In fact, who really cares? We are β
β all the masses. No one person is better than another one. Just because β
β maybe you can get invited into RiSC or maybe MALiCE's channel and talk β
β to a senior. Maybe you are even a senior in one of these groups. What β
β makes you better than Jim Smith on #Warez5? He probably spends most of β
β his time on IRC offering files to people who want them, giving more to β
β the scene than the ego that the people of iNQ seem to cherish so much. β
β β
β Oh, a note to iNQ, I really did expect to see much content in iNQ β
β issue 11 being that you had so long to work on it. I was utterly β
β dismayed when I found that nearly 50% of your mag spoke about RCN :-(. β

β β
β Computer technology is changing faster and faster by the day. It is β
β said that every six months, something new has become outdated. Here, β
β we'll look at the future of modems. The life of modems has changed β
β dramatically over the past few months. The best modems out in 1994 were β
β 14.4's. Around August, the 28.8 modem came out and sold for around β
β $300. In today's world, those 28.8 modems have become standard and some β
β warez boards even require that you have one to transfer files. More β
β and more boards are making the switch to ISDN, some for telnet, some β
β just for direct connections. ISDN isn't cheap, though, so even the β
β biggest boards are still holding back before they jump on this new β
β technology. β
β β
β This past month, I have seen at least ten new BBSs that have moved β
β to ISDN. Splatter King, a Swedish board, has setup an ISDN line β
β dedicated solely to uploading warez. It's a regular node, only β
β accepting one caller at a time, meant for uploads at 128k speeds. Zero β
β hour warez are no longer a thing of the Internet alone, they are common β
β on this board. Before the top boards move to ISDN for Internet access- β
β ability, they will probably move to direct nodes so couriers can have β
β greater uploads in shorter time periods. β
β β
β Many boards are moving to ISDN for Internet accessability so that β
β they may attract callers from around the world without a long distance β
β charge. Not only that, the Internet also allows an unlimited number of β
β nodes via Telnet. I don't suggest that you go above 4 nodes on a single β
β 128k connect, though, as speed will be severely decreased. The other β
β advantage to using ISDN is that the system operator of a given telnet β
β BBS may change the "number" (IP address) of his server at will. This is β
β a great security precaution. One board that is about to try this is β
β the Tower of Sourcery. It is installing a 128k terminal dedicated to β
β Telnet capabilities, hoping to expand its user base and courier base β
β making it an even more popular board, and opening its doors to a wealth β
β of new users. β
β β
β However, all this speed is not so cheap. The new digital ISDN β
β terminals (not modems, because on a digital line, there is no need for β
β modulation) can run around $400, not to mention line setups. Your phone β
β company will charge approximately $50 setup for the line, plus $20/month β
β for the monthly cost. Be aware, though, that a digital line actually β
β offers TWO lines in one, so you can get yourself a SECOND ISDN terminal β
β (yes, that'll be another $800!) and run it on the same "one" line that β
β you purchased from your phone company! Once you have your terminal β
β completely setup, you'll probably feel very proud, but don't forget β
β about Internet charges! Your provider will charge you much more for β
β internet access through ISDN. After all, you're using up a greater β
β amount of their resources. Once you do have everything setup, though, β
β you'll be cruising at a sweet 12.8 kilobytes/second. β
β β
β Alright, so you're not quite ready for ISDN yet? Don't feel bad, β
β neither am I. Your 28.8 will still do just fine for the time being, β
β don't be surprised if in another few months, you'll be at the store β
β searching for prices on a new ISDN terminal. β

β β
β Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, at one time or another, β
β each and every one of us was a newbie to the scene, or as the 3133+ β
β dudes called us, lamers. Some of us couldn't get into any groups, so we β
β decided to start our own, at least that way we would have an affiliation β
β to list on future apps, and hopefully better our chances of getting in a β
β group. I myself have run two groups of my own, one releasing, and one β
β couriering. The releasing group did fair, and managed to release the β
β first working I-phone crack. The couriering group, however, didn't do β
β so well, and wound up dying two weeks after it was formed. β
β β
β Many of the newbies to the scene go through this because most of β
β them can't find someone who is willing to give them a chance, but if β
β nobody ever gives them a chance, then nobody knows what they might be β
β able to do. Who knows, the next great courier or supplier might be β
β calling some little one node bbs right now, filling out that new user β
β application, and hoping to get on. When I read the article Hitex wrote β
β (RCN, Issue 10, Articles) I saw myself. I remember when I used to try β
β getting on k-rad warez boards, only to find out I wasn't cool enough. I β
β remember when I first got on a good warez board, because a guy who ran a β
β local BBS decided it wouldn't hurt anything for me to leech a few games β
β for his board. That guy later introduced me to the net, and taught me β
β about IRC. Prozac, I'd just like to say thanks. β
β β
β I quickly became addicted, and started leeching like a mad man. β
β Once I learned about all these groups, who I thought were so great for β
β getting us this software for free, I decided that I wanted to be a part β
β of one. Unfortunately, because I was a 'lamer' nobody would take me. β
β Then one day, about 8-9 months ago, about the same time as Hitex really β
β got started, I noticed this new group called Vendetta, so I thought hey, β
β there's one I haven't applied to yet. I tried getting an app, but they β
β didn't have one. I thought oh well, another one down. About that time, β
β the vice prez, Hitex (Krypton at the time) told me he would talk to me β
β about applying later, after he got his channel back. I thought, hey, β
β what a way to earn some suck-up points, I'll convince these guys that I β
β want to help them keep the channel, and give it back to Hitex. Well, β
β needless to say, they were too smart for me, but maybe my intentions β
β worked out, because he decided to give another lamer, that nobody had β
β heard of, a chance. it it hadn't been for Hitex allowing me into VND, I β
β honestly don't think I would be where I am today. That helped me get β
β into HWC because I could get them VND releases, then HWC merged with β
β fATE, and then, finally my dream came true, I was in one of the BIG β
β groups, and I even got to be a senior in fATE's releasing section, which β
β soon split off to form RoR. β
β β
β Who knows, without Hitex, if I would have ever been in HWC. If not, β
β I would have never been in fATE, or RoR. Hitex and Rebel Chicken really β
β are some of the elites of the scene today. Many don't like them, β
β probably because he gave too many people like me a chance, but I'd like β
β to think that he made the right decision. β
β β
β I don't know if anyone understands what I am saying or not, but β
β hopefully if you are a senior of some group, next time you get an app β
β from someone who has no affils, or experience in the scene, you will β
β think that hey, maybe this guy could turn out to be a good member. If β
β there was nobody to give the newbies a chance there would eventually be β
β nobody in the scene. Sure, the newbies are annoying, constantly bugging β
β you to be in the group, but they will overcome their excitement soon β
β after they get their first 0 hour ware. They will begin to understand β
β the scene a little better. If this article just changes one person's β
β opinion of the little affil-less newbies, then my story was worth it. β

β β
β Being a BBS SysOp used to be something to envy. Not everyone could β
β afford to have a BBS, the costs were very high. More recently, BBSs β
β have become virtually commonplace. The BBS scene has flourished, β
β competition has been on the rise, and boards have gone up in quality. β
β The top boards now consist of 15+ nodes, all pushing at 28.8 kbps or β
β even 33.6 kbps for the lucky ones. With the advent of the Internet, β
β though, we have been presented with a new form of data transfer, FTP β
β sites. FTP sites now run on super fast internet connections capable of β
β over 100k/s, assuming perfect efficiency. For a scene that relies β
β purely on speed, these new holding grounds are obviously the ideal β
β choice. There are, however, several issues that need to be tackled β
β before we can assume that the warez scene should move to sites. β
β β
β A fast BBS used to be the main form of "declaring a release." If a β
β group released a program and another group released it 30 minutes later, β
β the seniors could tell which group got to it first by seeing when the β
β release started to get on boards, or, more appropriately, when it got on β
β the competition's World Headquarter. I, personally, would refine that β
β to say that a release has been declared as soon as it has gotten on a β
β headquarter of a major couriering group, since it is the couriers that β
β are responsible for pushing the warez. The dilemna arrives when a β
β group tries to claim a release that they put only on FTP sites and on β
β IRC. If the group's couriers aren't fast enough, or if the release was β
β lost by only a few minutes, it may not have gotten on any BBSs yet. Is β
β an FTP site a proper "declaration" site? Some would argue. I, β
β personally, think that if the site is an official headquarter site of at β
β least one major group, it should be. FTP sites are very handy for β
β keeping track of things. They keep track of everything! Not only do β
β they tell you what date the release was uploaded on, but the time too, β
β down to the nearest second! β
β β
β I think that it is evident that FTP sites are a valid form of β
β stating a release, as long as they are big enough, which is the same β
β requirement we would put on a board. It is not enough to upload a β
β release to a single-node board in Afghanastan and say that you have β
β released it, nor is it enough to upload the release to a 3k/s anonymous β
β FTP site. β
β β
β Another argument that people often make about the Internet as a β
β releasing grounds is that IRC is a perfectly good place to declare a β
β release. This, I would have to disprove of. To my knowledge, IRC does β
β not keep a log of any times that anything was offered on or anything to β
β that degree. Moreover, IRC involves pure word of mouth, never anything β
β definite, so if DOD tries to release Nashville and PWA tries to do the β
β same on the same day, nearly at the same time, and the groups are too β
β dumb (note, this would NEVER happen with such experienced groups, these β
β guys know what to do if they have such a sweet release!) to upload the β
β release to any sites or to any boards, nobody will ever know who really β
β released it first. β
β β
β Ultimately, we wouldn't take the word of a small BBS to tell us when β
β a release was done, nor would we take the word of a small FTP site. We β
β will not take the word of IRC to tell us when a release was done, as we β
β are all a bunch of lying schmucks and would never get anywhere doing β
β that :-). Those are my two cents, if you have any comments or β
β suggestions, please write in! β

β Welcome to Dear Entropy! This is going to be YOUR column that is a β
β cross between Dear Abby and Dave Berry. The most important part of this β
β is YOUR participation. If you have ever had a question about the scene, β
β or just a comment, here's the place! Have you ever wanted to know why β
β some people do this or that? ASK! We would love to take it to the β
β extreme for you and we will be happy to research it! I hope you have as β
β much fun with this as I will! Remember, this is YOUR column! β

β Dear Dark Warrior from Issue 10, β
β β
β You are not godly, you are what is wrong with the world of BBSes β
β and files. First off, you don't R00lz (as you put it) cause you run a β
β 0-day BBS. Almost any sysop on IRC runs a 0-day BBS, the only way I β
β see people that rule (No 0's please) is from their attitude toward β
β other users on IRC and on BBSes in general. I can say without a doubt β
β that you have a lame ass, I am god attitude, I run a 0-day BBS and now β
β you can suck my dic??? HAHAAAAAAHHHHAAAA I also run a a BBS that gets β
β the files as soon as I snag them from the sites, usually within the a β
β few hours of release AND I don't even have a stuck up attitude. I β
β still belive in treating other users like people and that we are not β
β better or worse than them. If a lamer wants access, I don't say shit β
β like my dick and i will let you on. β
β β
β PS - You definitely do NOT R00LZ! β

β β
β Dear Road Rebel, β
β β
β I agree with you completely. I too ran a BBS. If you have a BBS and β
β have access to IRC, you have no excuse for NOT having 0 day files. β
β Unless that is, if you only have one line, and cannot tear yourself away β
β from IRC as Dragon Warrior seems to have that problem. However, he does β
β seem to find time get a blow job from his users... β

β Dear Entropy, β
β β
β I saw that this weeks topic would be about AOL, and lameness. I am β
β not an AOL member and never have been, BUT my older brother has an AOL β
β account from work and I looked around. Anyone who says that AOL sucks β
β is WRONG! The people on AOL may be LAME, but AOL is very nice and β
β organized. You can talk to famous stars which could never happen on IRC β
β due to the asshole factor. I could see some big band being interviewed β
β answering questions on IRC, yea right! IRCUZi would have a record usage β
β on that one, and members of the bad would get collided. Actually, it β
β would be funny, but anyways, AOL people are usually new to computers and β
β don't have a clue. I will admit that I avoid them but every once in a β
β while, I run into a good user from AOL and I was also VERY surprised to β
β see a Warez Scene on AOL. It is A LOT BIGGER than I would have ever β
β thought possible, and AOL couriers actually work their asses off for β
β what they get, and the fact that they persist and don't just give up β
β after being called lame 30 times a night deserves a bit of respest. β

β β
β β
β Dear Majestic Man, β
β β
β I agree with you. Most people from AOL are very new to computers. β
β Most people who use AOL are the people that are scared to venture into β
β the world of DOS, let alone the world of Internet where they might have β
β to see a Unix Prompt. People do go by what others say. Gettin people β
β to think for themselves is something that is going to take a long time. β
β For the past 200 years we as a civilization have come less then half way β
β in thinking for ourselfes. We all seem to take a "kin" to somebody who β
β in our minds looks like a cool person, someobody who maybe leads MaLiCE β
β or RTS. When somebody screams "Aol!" we all seem to head for our ban β
β command and hide behind the ego that somebody is trying cover us with. β
β The problem with thinking for ourselves is that if we do not conform to β
β the accepted mold, rumors start flying around that we are "Lame" or not β
β cool enough to be around. β

β β
β Dear Entropy, β
β β
β I wanted to make a statement about AOL piraters. Most IRCers think β
β that AOL is full of lamers that courier 2-3 year old releases. They β
β also believe that all of AOL is full of mindless 13 year olds begging β
β for games. They are MOSTLY right, but there is a section of AOL which β
β have a few elites. They are not really elite like IRC elite but they β
β are more elite than the avergae #Warez5 IRCer. IRCers don't see much of β
β AOL's warez because it is hidden well. These people have their own β
β private rooms and never go to the warez rooms, which makes #Warez look β
β like heaven. A group called ALLiED is a group full of 0 day uploaders β
β and are all old and respected warez people. ALLiED members get 0 day in β
β their mailbox every day, yes, I said 0 day. Believe it or not, AOL does β
β get 0 day and are sometimes faster than most boards. I get 0 day in my β
β mail box from four great AOL groups named UPS, Mystic, SPIN, and SNT. β
β I often get releases a few hours after they were released on the NET. β
β AOL is actually faster than many IRC channels. AOL is not as lame as β
β people think. There is more to the AOL piracy scene than the lame β
β warez rooms. β

β β
β β
β Dear Ddz, β
β β
β I happen to agree with you on many points. I have seen AOL groups β
β move warez faster than Net Couriers. It is amazing, we have so much to β
β work with in the area of speed and how easy it is to get a fast site. β
β People on AOL have to work a lot harder than we do. Getting people to β
β accept them is a huge problem. AOL is an extension of IRC, one that β
β is there whether or not we choose to admit it's existence. The days of β
β text based environments are leaving faster than we care to admit. They β
β are behing replaced by the great GUI interface that is taken over the β
β majority of households. Accepting AOL'ers into the internet is a way to β
β expand and make the scene the best that it can be. β

β Topic For Next Week : The Great #Warez<X>. β
β β
β #Warez1 through #Warez-Waldo, places that everyone curses but that β
β everyone seems to use. Infact, most couriering groups have people that β
β go into these rooms just to dcc offer. Why? I thought that the β
β #Warez<X> rooms are places that "lamers" and "aolers" hang out to try to β
β be as cool, as people from fATE or MALiCE. No? It appears not. fATE β
β has its own personal warez channel. What is this? Just another place β
β where people can leech. Is that not the same as #Warez666? Hell YES! β
β Where did we all start from? When you are looking for something and you β
β can't find it on your 9 gig RiSC site, where do you go? You join β
β #Warez. Sure, #Warez1 is better than #Warez5, but why? Is this just β
β another case of how our little society would like to stay in its own β
β little "Elite" enviroment where we don't want anybody else? Suppor the β
β warez channels! We all go there, we all use it! β
