Let me tell you about the BRAINS at AT&T.... Tonight (Thursday, May 19th) I got a phone call. BEFORE identifying themselves, they asked if I knew anybody in Germany and Sweden. ofcoz, being the brilliant person I am, i said "erm... no?".... Now... this lady (Mrs. Engle) said that there were fraudulent calls amounting to $1500 USD. She said that my number(s) [voice & bbs, but she knows NOTHING about the bbs] showed up "frequently." So i said how frequently.... April 25th ... 1:49AM - 2mins April 25th ... 2:59AM - 46mins April 25th ... 4:05AM - 1.5 mins ( real frequent, eh? )... OK.. Anyway on with the story. I said that nobody would be awake at those times. So she goes on to say how I could really help out AT&T in catching these 'criminals' ( who just happen to be my friends ) and so and so... I said is there a reward? She said maybe. Right now AT&T would absorb the calls ($1500) as losses. I asked her again if she worked for AT&T and this time she said she works out of her house. AT&T working out of a house? I highly doubt it. So now I jumped on the fact that she didn't work for AT&T. I told her that calling me and saying she was from AT&T was false misrepresentation, and that her actions could bring legal consequences. Naturally, faced with a difficult situation, she hung up. Wait, it's not over.... Since BELL ATLANTIC was so kind as to give me their 'CALL BLOCK' feature, I hit *60 and blocked her number. Unfortunate for her, the feature tells you EXACTLY which number you are blocking. After it was done, I cleared it out, so she could call me again. I dialed her number. The first few times it was busy. Then, at around 10:00PM I got through. Some girl picked up the phone and said "AT&T, How may I help you." I said gimme Mrs. Engle. She had the NERVE TO SAY "PLEASE HOLD, I'LL CONNECT YOU." All she really did was put the phone in her hand and yell to her . Anyway. Mrs. Engle picks up the phone. I told her that I was very concerned about these fraudulent calls. Here's the kicker. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THEM! Anyway, after hearing that I went all out. I asked her if she was a PAID EMPLOYEE of AT&T. She said NO. I reminded her that misrepresenting yourself is illegal. To make a long story short, she accused ME of making the calls. This is the brains of AT&T customers. They think that I would fly to Germany, call her ( at all odd hours of the night ), then FLY BACK to the USA. Yeah, sure. So I asked her how she could possibly expect me to do that. She made some stupid line, saying "You'd fly!" No, I'm gonna buy the Nike Jesus Air and walk my ass back to the fucking states, right? URG! Here's where it starts to get funny. She told me that if I turned in the people making the calls that "we" could all rest easier. So I simply told her I had one question. She said OK. I said "Where do you buy your crack?". Anyway, she hung up. At 10:22PM, I got a call to my BBS. It picked up and did the normal ATA command. There was no carrier. So ofcoz, being the Harvard genius that I am, I did the *60 routine again. Sure enuff, it was her. I called her back, on my bbs line, saying that I knew who the people were. She basically said "TELL ME OR DIE." I told her I'd need a bit of time, and that I'd need her work number ( if she's an AT&T employee, it should be a 1800 number). She said she'd have to ask her supervisor about it. Yeah, ok. The point I'm trying to get at is simple. If any of you state-side sysops get calls from people claiming to be from AT&T, have fun with them. Do what I did. Enjoy yourself. Relieve your frustration on the day with them. Remember, Beat AT&T, Not Your Kid. OK anyway... nothing much to write now... both numbers have her BLOCKED from calling me, and I've reported her to the local authorities saying she was pranking me. We'll see how it turns out... heh heh.. DO NOT FORGET THAT YOU CANNOT AND WILLNOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CALLS. IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT THEY WERE MADE. TO THE EURO'S... I doubt AT&T will do anything to you guys. They're not about to spend $20,000 to bring you to the USA, then put you in a court.
