Key Features - complete spectral effect toolbox - spectral morph, filter, pan, delay, and smear - warp, twist and shape your synths and samples - manipulate individual frequencies - immersive, easy to use graphic user interface What is Spectron? Spectron is the next generation of spectral effect plug-ins allowing unmatched control over audio by frequency. Now, take your mixed drum track and add delay to the snare, or send the hi-hat panning back and forth. Give your guitar a delay, but only on the high notes. Make your bass ring down low, but stay clear and dry up high. For effects that are subtle or out of this world, Spectron is the one-stop spectral toolbox. Spectron splits audio into thousands of frequency bands, applies independent delay, morph, filter and pan effects, and then resynthesizes the processed audio into an entirely new sound. Using this unique control over individual frequencies, Spectron can sound like a phaser, chorus, vocoder and many new classes of effects. Spectron is perfect for radio spots, loop and sample manipulation, sound effect design, and electronic & dance music production. Spectral Node Even though Spectron’s approach to processing is unique, the Spectron interface relies on standard controls. The Spectron effects are manipulated by Spectral Nodes which behave like the nodes of a parametric EQ with control over frequency, amount, bandwidth, and shape. Once you’ve mastered the basic node operation, you can use Spectron Nodes with LFOs and envelope triggers to open another level of creativity. The frequency, amount, shape, and width automate with advanced control over speed and patterns not possible with normal automation. For example, setup a volume trigger to change the delayed frequency and play it live on a guitar allowing you to control the amount of delay based on how loud you play! Looking for a New Sound? Spectron was designed with creativity and originality in mind. With Spectron, you can easily create effects that aren’t possible with analog hardware, inspiring new ideas for creating intricate and evolving soundscapes. Looking for something a little more subtle? You can use Spectron just as easily to add coloration with flanges, spatialization, or light filter sweeping. Read about how producer Atticus Ross used Spectron this way to process Jonathan Davis’ vocals for a “cold” sound. Spectron on the Silver Screen Spectron is the ideal tool for atmospheric soundscapes and special effects for film, video and game sound design. Create an eerie, extra-terrestrial setting by simply applying panning and delay to parts of a string or other pad patch. Use left-right filtering to simulate a sound source coming from a specific point around the subject of a scene. Make explosions come to life by morphing your stock explosion sound with a car crash effect or a screaming vocal. Read how sound designer Aaron Glascock creates organic, yet unfamiliar sounds in "War of the Worlds" and other blockbuster films. Extend the Life of Your Loops and Samples Every sound designer, producer and electronic musician has at least one set of loops and samples sitting around. Save yourself some time and money and let Spectron turn those old, worn out samples into a multitude of new and exciting sounds. Add a sense of space to your drums with panning, turn your basses into malfunctioning robots with harmonic delays, make your vocal samples burst into a chorus of pipe organs with morphs. Hundreds of Effects in an Instant Spectron can stand on its own with only the factory presets to provide you hours of inspiration with new sounds. Looking for a crazy effect right away? Check out Spectron’s integrated preset system. Right out of the box, you get tons of quality presets, and the list is constantly growing. With the presets, Spectron is a virtual “stomp box” for guitars, keys, bass, vocals, and anything else that needs new aural life. Experienced users will find the presets as very useful starting points for creating their own sounds with Spectron. Be sure to check the iZotope web site for new presets. Usability Enhancements: Automation Do you have a really cool patch, but wish you could control some of the effects more precisely, or control many parameters at once? Spectron offers over 225 automatable parameters, which means that almost anything that you want to automate in your host application can be assigned. For instance, if you have a section of a drum break that you want to twist and melt into a completely arrhythmic mess at the end, you can automate an increase in delay time and feedback just for the part that you want. If you want to add a filter drop in a synth line, just automate an increase in a filter node’s bandwidth or cutoff frequency. You can get really creative with this, and it always pays off to experiment. With a little ingenuity, you can hand-craft completely immersive and evolving soundscapes that were previously impossible without loads of effects and a crack team of synthesis masters at the wheel! Spectral Morph - vocoder-like cross-modulation effect - LFO and envelope modulation - control thresholds of input/target - independent channel control - load any MP3, AIFF or WAV target Transform your audio Ever wonder what your voice would sound like crossed with a drum track? How about a guitar and an organ? Spectron's powerful spectral morph gives you the freedom to take your sound to the outer limits. The morph module gives you frequency-based control over morph amounts, as well as separate control over the left and right channels for spatialization and even more freedom. The morph module matchs the frequencies of the Input signal to match the spectrum of the Target signal. The threshold controls, however, let you limit the frequencies that the Morph module tries to match, based on their level. If a frequency band is below the threshold, the Morph module ignores it and won't try to boost it to match. This allows you to match the overall character of two signals without needlessly trying to match low level signals that could just be noise or "noncharacteristic" frequencies. As a rule of thumb, thresholds of -75 dB for both the Input and Target will pass through the overall characteristic of the sound without requiring Spectron to morph low level extraneous signals. Reorder the Spectron modules with the "Graph" button and further process the morph output. Delay - create vast, evolving soundscapes easily - spectral control over delay and feedback - separate left and right channel control - LFO and envelope modulation for each feedback and delay node Intricate audio delay and feedback control Toss out your old, boring stomp box delay and step into Spectron's spectral delay. Manipulate delay time and feedback based on frequency, add envelopes and LFO's, then tweak the left and right sides separately. Yes, it's that cool. Adjust feedback and delay, as well as bandwidth and shape of each of the four spectral nodes, with Spectron's intuitive "EQ-style" display. Make it move with assignable LFO's and envelopes. With Spectron's delay section, it's hard not to be creative. Check out these audio examples for a sampling of what you can expect from Spectron's spectral delay. The delay module also includes a snapping. Snapping gives you a way to snap the delay to a multiple of a tempo. Set your reference tempo in BPM (or Period) with the slider or tap it in directly. Once you've set your reference tempo, set a "Snap Type" to control the distance or minimum allowable delay. For example, with a Snap Type of "Quarter", delays will be forced to lie on quarter note intervals. Filter - sweep, stutter and shape your sound with ease - separate filtering for left and right channels - LFO and envelope modulation - filter harmonics separately - control number of bands - extensive visual feedback with several meter modes Digital EQ with unprecedented control Sweep, slide and squelch with Spectron's 4-node modulated filters. This is not your standard filter. Spectron's filter section offers four fully adjustable filters for left-channel, right-channel and stereo filter effects. You can modulate each filter node with an LFO or envelope, and then go one step further with the advanced LFO for modulation of the LFO affecting the node. As shown in the image on the left, you can turn on "harmonics only" mode and filter only the harmonics of the base frequency for some cool "comb filter" effects. The unique design of Spectron's filter section also allows you to do some cool "stutter" effects, as shown in the video below. Operation of the Filter module is pretty straightforward -- select a node, set a shape, and drag up to increase the gain of the frequencies covered by that node, or drag down to cut the gain of those frequencies. What you'll notice, however, is that you can create very non-traditional shapes with the Spectron Filter module. You're not limited to the typical "bell curves" of a parametric EQ. You can create squares, triangles, notches, curves, etc. They behave like traditional filters, but the don't have to look or sound like the old school EQs. Spectral Pan - create space in your sound, track or mix - make it move with advanced LFO and envelope modulation - harmonic filtering for some more, or less, subtle effects Have it both ways Add a little space to your sounds or send them spinning around the room. Spectron gives you a new take on panning and spatialization. In normal effects, panning is pretty boring. Pan to the left, pan to the right -- that's about the extent of it. Spectral panning, on the other hand, is an entirely different story. With Spectron you can grab regions of frequencies, pan them, modulate them, or envelope trigger them. These examples show you some simple tricks you can perform easily with Spectron to put beats in various channel combinations. Check out the audio examples to see what we mean. For very strange spatial effects, experiment with spectral panning with the "Harmonics Only" and "Mute Unprocessed" frequencies options. This will effectively mute all of your audio expect harmonics, which can then be panned and swept across the frequency range and stereo field. If that effect by itself is too strange for you, try using Spectron as a send effect in your host app to control mix of dry (unpanned) and wet (panned harmonic frequencies). Smear - chain up to 4 modulated delay lines - control modulation rate, depth, feedback and waveform - LFO Delay, Rate, Depth, Type - Echo, Stereo Phase and Crossmix Flange, chorus, buzz and phase with Spectron's four-stage modulated delay section. Smear gives you not one but four modulated delays. Of course, there's some extra iZotope goodies like echo phase, stereo phase and a mini-spectrum filter. Add some space with the crossmix slider, create more complex modulation with the echo phase and stereo phase sliders, and choose from 6 different LFO waveforms for each delay line. Spectron's smear section lets you add that extra shine to your sound, or warp it beyond recognition. You know you want to. Four Echos with control over: - LFO Delay, Rate, Depth, Type - Echo Phase - Stereo Phase - Crossmix - Feedback (with inversion) The Smear module offers overall wet/dry gain controls, with the ability to invert the polarity of the wet signal. You can also tailor the frequency response of the wet signal with the mini-spectrum at the top of the screen. As shown below, simply drag the handles on the spectrum to filter the modulated signal. Note that this does not effect the frequency response of the wet signal.
