Bringing together the popular with what has up to now been considered experimental, AudioMulch merges the worlds of mainstream electronica and electroacoustic sound composition to create a fluid sonic environment only limited by the artist's imagination. While many of the processes featured within AudioMulch are not new to computer music programs, it is the software's ability to carry out these traditionally "studio" or "non-real-time" signal processing techniques in real-time that emerges as its major asset. With AudioMulch, music that has for so long been limited to the pre & post-production practices of a studio can emerge in a new LIVE and interactive context. Through the essentially unlimited (only by the power of the computer) combination of a network of synthesis and processing contraptions, AudioMulch allows the user to extend their current audio processing capabilities or create new music within their computer without additional expensive software or hardware systems. Contraptions AudioMulch 'Contraptions' (signal processing elements) include: Signal Generators: Test tone / noise, drum machine, bassline synthesizer, additive synthesizer, stored sample granulator, loop player, Shepard / Risset tone generator, arpeggiator. Effects: Reverb, flanger, phaser, delay line granulator, ring / amplitude modulation, stereo delays, dynamic stereo spatialiser, waveshaper / distortion , digital grunge inducer, pulsar comb filter. Filters: Parametric EQ, resonant comb filter bank, Shepard / Risset filter bank, granular filtering. AudioMulch supports VST audio effects plugins, allowing over 50 free plugins and many commercial plugins to be used within the AudioMulch environment. Capabilities AudioMulch can be used to process and generate sound files or as a live performance instrument. AudioMulch allows any processing parameter to be controlled via MIDI. AudioMulch can syncronise to an external MIDI clock source. Up to 16 channels of real-time audio input and output can be generated and / or processed by AudioMulch when used in conjunction with a multichannel soundcard. System Requirements AudioMulch is a 32 bit Windows application requiring either Windows95/98/Me or NT4.0/2000/XP (or later). To hear audio in real-time (that is what the program is designed for) you need a soundcard capable of delivering 16bit 44.1k stereo sound. To process audio from the soundcard input you will need a full-duplex soundcard i.e. one capable of simultaneous 16bit 44.1k stereo recording and playback. To do anything useful a Pentium(R) class machine is required. MMX Won't speed things up much but enhanced floating-point (Pentium Pro or Pentium II, III, IV, AMD Athlon etc.) will. The faster the machine, the more you can do in real-time. 10/12/2004 AudioMulch 0.9b18 Release Notes AudioMulch version 0.9b18 includes the new Metasurface window which allows you to store and recall parameter snapshots for the whole document, and to smoothly move between them by moving the mouse. The new example file Metasurface1.amh demonstrates how the Metasurface can be used to move smoothly between different sonic textures. See below for more information about the Metasurface. Other bug fixes and changes in this release include: - An option to use 7 or 14 bit MIDI controllers for MIDI quick-map has been added to the MIDI Control tab of the Settings dialog. - Moved Document Switcher settings to main settings dialog - Fixed bug where exported file durations were wrong if the export sample rate did not match the real-time sample rate - Fixed bug where the overdrive checkbox didn't work in the settings dialog - Fixed bug where MIDI switching threshold for boolean (checkbox) parameters was always reset to 1 after reloading a document - Included PortAudio bug fixes which may have caused glitches or timing errors with some ASIO devices Metasurface This version of AudioMulch includes a preliminary version of a new control interface called "The Metasurface". The Metasurface provides a way to change many contraption parameters at once by moving the mouse. You can store snapshots of settings for a whole a document and selectively restore parameters from these snapshots. This is similar to contraption presets except that it can be applied to some or all parameters in the document, not just those of a single contraption. The snapshots can be placed on an area of the window, you can smoothly move between the snapshots by clicking and dragging the mouse around the surface. To display the Metasurface use the Metasurface item in the View menu, or the Metasurface toolbar button, or press F10. The Metasurface window has three panes, from left to right they are: - The Parameter Selection Tree allows you to select which parameters will be restored by the Metasurface. All available parameters are listed under each contraption. You can click on each parameter to select or deselect it. For example, you might wish to deselect parameters which you control by other means such as Automation or MIDI control. Only the parameters which have been selected will be restored when recalling a snapshot or dragging the mouse on the interpolation surface. - The Snapshot List shows the list of snapshots. You can create a new snapshot by clicking the New Snapshot button at the top of the Metasurface window. You can recall a snapshot by double-clicking on the snapshot's name. Single clicking without moving the mouse allows you to edit the snapshot's name. Right-clicking a snapshot displays a popup menu which allows you to recall a snapshot, store a new set of values in it, delete the snapshot, or change the colour which is used to display the snapshot on the surface. To place a snapshot on the Interpolation Surface simply drag it onto the surface. You can place each snapshot on the surface more than once if you wish. To remove a snapshot from the surface simply drag it off the surface. - The Interpolation Surface allows you to place snapshots in arbitrary positions and move smoothly between them by dragging the mouse. The surface has two modes: the snapshot placement mode and the interpolation mode. You can switch between modes using the Interpolate button at the top of the Metasurface window. In snapshot placement mode you can move snapshots around the surface by clicking and dragging them. In interpolation mode, clicking and dragging on the surface interpolates between the nearest snapshots. One limitation of this preliminary version is that snapshots only apply to real and range parameters (not to checkboxes, integers, patterns etc), this may be changed in the future. Future versions of the Metasurface will support MIDI control. CannonLooper and LiveLooper contraptions - Use at your own risk The CannonLooper and LiveLooper contraptions which appear in the Beta category were included by accident in a previous (0.9b13) release. These contraptions are still under development and may change before they are finished. This is why there is no documentation. They have been included for users who have started using them, however it is important that you do not depend on their behavior as they will certainly change in the future.
