UFO : Enemy Unknown Soldier Editor
Coded by Gibor Haern [SSD]
This is a very simple program, simply throw it into your main UFO
directory and execute it. It will ask you which save game you would
like it to edit (from 1 to 0, where 0 is of course game 10). Once
you've done this, you'll be presented with the first soldier in your
file. From here on, it should be fairly intuitive, except for possibly
one detail. Most of the options have both upper and lower case keys
listed beside them. For almost all options, entering the lowercase key
will change the value for only that soldier, while editing the uppercase
key will change EVERY soldier in your file. The prompts look the same,
so make sure you know what you're hitting. The program does not make a
backup, and edits using the file as a workspace, so you might want to
backup the file before using the editor. The relevant file is
solider.dat, and is in the respective save game directory (for example,
C:\UFO\GAME_1\SOLDIER.DAT). If you select a game that has not been
saved, the program will crash, because soldier.dat does not yet exist
and I didn't feel like checking for the file first. This should about
cover all the mechanics of the editor.
Unfortunately, the mechanics of the game itself require some mention
to. When you run the editor, you will notice that most of the skills
and statistics are grouped into three catagories, cunningly entitled by
myself groups A, B, and C. Group A skills increase with rank and
experience.. but, I have no idea HOW the game increases them.
Normally, they go up by one or two at a time, but if you set them at 200
or so, they'll go up by hundreds as you get more experience.
Unfortunately, it seems that the game only allocates a byte for the
statistics in the combat system (which is, of course, the only point in
the game when they matter), so any value above 255 will wrap around,
meaning you could have really low stats. The highest the game ever
starts people off with is 79, so I just set mine to this and was done
with it. No such trickery is found with groups B and C. Group B skills
just stay as they are.. so feel free to crank them to around 250 without
any ill effects (outside of well over 100% shooting accuracy.. but
that's no problem). Group C skills are the psionic ones, and I've
grouped them seperately simply because they don't come into play until
later in the game, and people might not want to mess with them until
then. These skills don't seem to go up with experience either, although
they will with psionic training.. so be careful not to mess them up
yourself. Armor can only range from 0 to 3, any higher and it might
work until combat, but when you go into combat the game will crash
horribly. So, don't set it too high. The rest of the stuff you can
edit should be fairly self-explanitory. Best of luck....
