√2·1Notes From The Editor
·4Holy Shit, PAW '93 #11...Already!? Yep
we're back again, on time and ready to
stay that way so stay tuned for one or
even two more issues to help you get
through the Christmas Rush. Why down-
load 30 or 40 ZIPs with the same ads and
generators from those other "leading
brands" when you've got PAW Mini's and
comprehensive PAW Mags to deal with??
Oh, to start things off, we got our
first ORIGINAL PAW musical score here.
This first of many I hope - no more
canabalizing .MOD collections for us!!
Now that I've blown our collective horn,
I'll let you in on our little secret
weapon that is destined to revolutional-
ize the PAW way of life. Phoenix, our
lead programmer, has developed a PAW
Engine!! "Huh?" say the masses...
Up until this very issue, the process of
building a PAW VGA release was more than
a little drawn out. In addition to the
grabbing and reviewing of every game we
encountered, the clicking of screen
shots and my editing of all those
reviews, there was also the ardous task
of compiling the issue which, depending
on wind conditions, took anywhere from
a few hours to a few days for the poor
programmer. No longer. The PAW Engine
automates the process and builds the
needed files in a matter of minutes!!
Please note that this has resulted in a
number of additional files shipped with
the mag which we are going to cut down.
No increase in size really, but it looks
so damn messy ;). On the other hand, we
have freed some memory space so, hope-
fully, bigger .MODs will play...
Thus, hats off to Phoenix... Now, free
of compilation woes (well, we haven't
tested this yet), look for many new and
exciting features to the mag program it-
self. After only a year and three lead
programmers, we've got all the basics
covered - onwards and upwards one and
all...
Oh, and my personal greets and congrats
to the new boys in PTG. Helluva a couple
weeks so keep it up... Actually, it was
a helluva a couple weeks all around!!

√2·1Programmer's Note
·4Guess what! No new (visible) changes to
the mag. There have been massive
internal modifications though. And
because of these you'll most likely see
PAW actually keep to a bi-monthly
schedule. There will also be more
visible additions to the magazine over
the next few issues as well. By 1994 PAW
will be at peak performance.
Also, on an unrelated note, I'd (we'd)
really like to hear some feedback about
PAW. All the members can be contacted
through PAWNet, so if you have any
compliments, comments or criticisms
about PAW please let us know.

- a "real" release??
√2·1PAW Reviewing Policy
·41. The main purpose of the Pirates
Analyze Warez Review is to provide
usable review information on all games
released by all groups and available in
the pirate world. Issues will be
released every second Sunday after that
with each magazine covering the two week
period ending on the Friday before
release. Hopefully, we will, in most
cases, be able to stick to schedule.
2. Reviews will NOT, however, be
included on the following release types:
a) Foreign Language Releases - as our
entire staff is made up of
unilingual anglophones, it is
impossible to do an effective job
reviewing a foreign release. Games
of this nature will be listed in
the "Wares In This Issue" list and
in an "Editor's Notes" review so
that the size of the release is
counted.
b) Add-Ons and Updates - it is
assumed that potential users of
such releases are already familiar
with the original games in
question thus rendering singular
reviews unnecessary. As such, we
will simply list the review in the
"Warez In This Issue" list and add
an "Editor's Note" review so that
the size of the file is counted,
c) DEMOs - while game demos have a
place in the pirate world, they do
NOT have a node in the reviewing
forum. As such, we will only list
such releases in the "Warez In
This Issue" listing. No size score
for a DEMO release will be given
to the releasing group.
c) Repacks - quite simply, game re-
releases will NOT be reviewed as
we wish to stay on the "cutting
edge" and not simply rehash older
games. This releases will be
listed in the "Warez In This
Issue" list and as an "Editor's
Notes" review so that a minus five
penalty can be awarded to the
releasing group.
3. PAW also intends to score all
releases on the basis of size and
quality (see PAW Scoring System
article). A definite system will be in
place by Issue '94 #01.

·1√2PAW Quality Scoring Revision II
·4Each release will be scored based on the
two categories listed below. The total
points will be cumulated for ongoing
rankings of the Groups.
1. QUALITY - Theory: All warez should
be worth the time and energy needed to
download them. This means that typical
standards such as sound and graphics
quality should be upheld. It also means
that well-anticipated games are of
inherently higher quality and that, for
most, re-releases are not...
0 - +5 - Graphics Quality
0 - +5 - Sound Quality
0 - +5 - Playability
0 - +5 - Originality
0 - +5 - Anticipation Level
-1 - -5 - educational/ancient/lame
-1 - -5 - duplicate of earlier release
(ie - unchanged US vs UK)
-1 - -5 - dysfunctional/non-working
2. SIZE - Theory: As the Warez Report
once scored it, this is the ONLY comp-
onent of group rankings rather than
simply a part. Still, one must recog-
nize the effort and organization needed
to courier and effectively move larger
releases and include it in a score.
+ 1 - Per 500,000 bytes.
Under this incarnation of the scoreing
policy, a "perfect" game would get fives
for Graphics, Sound, Originality and
Playability (shown in the actual review
on a scale of one to ten), an additional
five for Anticipation PLUS a point for
every 500,000 bytes of size. Needless
to say it would not suffer penalties.
Note also that we intend to remain non-
partisan in the case of multiple groups
releasing the same game. It is not our
place to judge the micro-second and make
a winner or loser. Only in cases of
blatant double or triple releasing will
a penalty be given.
It is, however, possible to award the
groups that crack and uncracked release
bonus scoring for their efforts.
I expect the PAW Scoring Policy to be
completely evolved by Issue '94 #01.

·1√2PAW Disclaimer
·4The purpose of the Pirates Analyze Warez
(PAW) Magazine is to provide the reader
with usable reviews of new entertainment
software releases in a timely manner.
This information is intended to allow
the user to make a more informed
purchase decision when used in
conjunction with other reviewing
sources. The members of PAW Magazine do
NOT condone piracy in any form. Quite
simply, if you think the software is
worth getting, pay for it.
All software reviewed in PAW Magazine
is, admittedly, obtained through less-
than-legal sources. However, immediately
following review, each software release
is deleted and, if further play is
desired, purchased. This pre-purchase
trial of the software is not unlike that
available through any software lending
group.
Again, PAW Magazine does not, in any
way, condone or endorse the illegal
obtaining and/or use of commercial
software. The Magazine is a fully
public domain release of review material
created to benefit both the end-user of
the software and, in the end, the
publishers themselves.
